Hey guys. I recently installed Fedora 14 on my PC (I've used it before, but recently switched to Windows XP and now going back). Here are the things I did after install...
1. Installed all possible updates that the Update manager showed me. Without discrimination.
2. Installed Nvidia drivers (my video card is the 9600GT) via a tutorial from If Not True Then False. (which had worked excellently before)
3. Installed Firefox 4, Flash Player 10.2 ... again via tutorials from If Not True Then False.
4. Installed some third-party software I always need, such as SMPLayer, VLC.
Now, the problem I am facing is with media playback, of ANY kind. Whenever I install NVidia drivers on Fedora, then the default Movie Player performs unnecessary letterboxing on videos (which appear stretched as a result). I've accepted this and as the same thing never happens in VLC/SMPlayer... I use them. But the trouble began when the basic Movie Player and Rhythmbox didn't even play any MP3 files. They didn't give any sound at all.
Then, I opened some music files and some video files via SMPlayer and SMPlayer *always* crashed as soon as I opened it. It gave me this message -
I honestly don't know what it means.
I tried opening some music files on VLC and it played them in a very patchy way, with lots of jagging and dropping. I opened some MKV files on VLC Player and although the video was just fine... it didn't play the audio smoothly at all. There was lots of jagging and dropping, again.
I would like to point out that what I've done this time around is NOT AT ALL different from anything I've done on my earlier installations of Fedora (which worked perfectly under the same settings). I have a Creative Audigy Sound Blaster Value soundcard which Fedora automatically detects, all the speakers test correctly and this same setup worked smoothly in earlier installations of Fedora.
Can anyone please tell me what's wrong this time around? What can I do to repair this? Please help!
