I have an old HP P4 PC which i want to use to download stuff by leaving that turned ON overnight. Now here are few things that are arising:

1) First of all, the PC's clock is showing random wrong time after every bootup (i want that it should show correct time because i use a scheduler to start downloads). will changing the CMOS battery will correct this thing?

2) If i change my CMOS, what will happen to my antivirus as well as will it have any affect on some other things also?

3) Second and one of the most important issue is this. It have a 8600GT (XFX 256MB) installed. Now, prior, i used a 500W local PSU when i used to play games on that but few months ago the PSU gone kaput and i connected the Original HP 250W PSU, though i didnt used the CPU much after that. Will that PSU be enough to run GPU, Motherboard and a HDD idle as when i will download, the GPU will be on no load??

^^ I'll answer in the same order you've put the queries, Sire --

1) Yes the CMOS batter has run out of charge, so change it and reset all time and date in the BIOS and then again in the Windows environment.

2) No none of your other settings, softwares and programs will be affected by replacing the spent CMOS battery.

3) No better invest in a decent Corsair CX V2 430W ~ 2200/- OR Seasonic S12II 430W ~ 2600/-, the new SMPS apart from being more capable of taking the load of a discrete GPU are also 80 + efficiency cerified [80+ Bronze in Seasonic's case] this means if you keep your system on for the night [OR extended time periods], the system will run more efficiently, generate less heat and as a whole consume lesser power.

Hope this answers your queries. Cheers!!

Can u guide me a little more for what i have to do in BIOS and will i have to tweak my BIOS after tweaking the OS time or before?

^^ Follow these steps --

1) as you boot into your system [when you push the power button], the BIOS screen will flash and you'll be prompted to enter the BIOS by hitting a pre-determined key [Del OR F2 commonly], enter the BIOS,

2) once in, on the opening page itself the date / time functions will be present -- adjust these to the right values,

3) once the values are set, quit the BIOS and save the changes you made,

4) boot into you OS [Windows / Linux / Hackintosh], the changes will reflect in your Windows clock [the time will be same as you put into the BIOS],

5) Connect to internet and sync your clock and date to whichever server you wish.

Hope this helps, Cheers!!

- Changing the CMOS battery will solve the issue.

2) If i change my CMOS, what will happen to my antivirus as well as will it have any affect on some other things also?

- your OS installation is not dependent on the CMOS battery. That battery is just to provide juice to the CMOS for keeping track of the time, and to keep the CMOS setting (BIOS setting) in memory.

- I guess it willl be OK since your system is low end one and 8600 is not a high-end card as well.

But to be on the safe side, you can change the PSU.

@all

I am thinking of taking out the card as i dont play games on the CPU. Even though i play, i play only counter strike using LAN, which my onboard some ATI express graphics (they used to run carbon and even prostreet on Low) can handle easily. Better be on safer side.

^ thats a better decision, since the GPU is not used, then why should it be inserted in the system.

Moreover your onboard GPU is more then enough for regular purpose.

Good decision mate

I removed the GPU. After that, i changed the primary display preference from BIOS to onboard. But IDK, just after showing the motherboard HP blue screen, its not loading the windows. Instead, a cursor is blinking on the right side of the black screen.

The Onboard is of ATi and my GPU was of nvidia. Is that some driver issue?? Or how can this problem be solved.

P.S. When i installed the GPU, then i remember i didnt uninstalled any ATi driver catalyst. Instead, i just installed the forceware of nVidia, so, i think the driver should be there.

Please help...
