Hey, guys, I got BSNL Type II Modem + Router, probably Siemens SL_141 model.

So here are my few queries regarding configuration of WiFi...
1. What is Network Authentication?? What should I choose??
Options are : Open(Presently), Shared, 802.1x, WPA, WPA-PSK, WPA2, WPA2-PSK, Mixed WPA/WPA2, Mixed WPA/WPA2 PSK

Should I keep it to Open as of now or should I change it??

2. WEP Encryption?? I've enabled it and created a network key(128 bit, that's was highest), I think this is the key which I need to enter on WiFi devices while connecting right?? If so, what's Network Authentication??

Please help me out understanding these things... :)
Thank you in advance :)

I think WPA2-PSK is good. Do not use OPEN, cause anyone can piggy-back on your radio signals.

^^Yes, that's what I wanted to know.

Thanks but didn't got your point clearly, what do you mean by piggy back??

I have enabled WEP Encryption and created a network key, so is this the key I need to enter on my WiFi devices??

If yes then what'll WPA2-PSK will do extra??

Well, please don't mind, I'm not arguing with you, I'll do what you suggested, but just for information I want to know the matter. :P

BTW when I select WPA2-PSK it asks me to enter WPA Pre Shared Key and Enryption Mode which has TKIP, AES, TKIP+AES as options. Which one to use??

^^

Not really sure how the encryption key thing really works, but with WPA2-PSK a key will needed to be inputted by each device first time they log into your network. I have AES encryption set, cannot remember why, but had researched it out seemed to suffice.

Piggy Back = ride on someone. You do not want some one to use your bandwidth, so security measures need to be set, like you have...!

^ +1.. WPA2- PSK is the best and less complicated encryption where most devices are compatible...

AFAIK different encryption modes offer different security levels. the wpa2-psk (wifi protected access - pre shared key) is a standard encryption method and more secure when compared to the traditional WEP ( wired equivalent privacy) since the latter can be hacked easily by an intelligent hacker...

But some older devices wont support wpa2 and in those cases there is no other way other than to switch to wep. In my cases i was having some issues with wpa2-psk with old FW of my E71. That issue was corrected in the new FW and so i switched over to WPA2-PSK and it works flawlessly...
