Was planning to ditch the F305 very soon and get hold of something better. Attracted by the buzz created all around I planned to look into the Nokia 523X series. So was thinking of buying 5230 Nuron. But before that I have few questions regarding it, since i haven't used the Symbian platform I was a bit skeptical about its functionality.

So here I go : -

1. How much message the phone can hold. I was planning to pack it with a 4Gb card.
2. How good/bad is the OVI maps ? I heard it wasn't able to fetch location in couple of reviews. Will it work with Tata Docomo / Vodafone?
3. How is the performance of the phone ? Does it hangs now and then ? raksrules was mulling over some restarting problem in the 5230 thread.
4. Does it have pdf support ? How much is the file size limit ?
5. What video format it supports ?
6. How diverse is the software libre ? How am I suppose to install ?

Apart from that is it really a good but all around @ 7.x k ? I am really tempted to buy it but don't want to screw it up this time as i did with F305 decision. Ohh I am not looking for non 3g and gps version the 5233 I am looking for phone with 3g/gps i.e 5230 or 5235. But since 5235 is insanely priced I am looking forward to 5230. Is 5230 still available or being phased out ?

Please do help me

1. unlimited

2. some like ovi maps and some like google maps. I liked google maps as I always have EDGE connectivity but othewise Ovi maps is terrific piece of s/w which doesnt' need internt connection. this helps when you are in areas of low internet connectivity.

3. it has a decent processor and as long as you keep it clutter free, it should run well

4. there are pdf readers available but the reading sucks!

5. i think only mp4 video

6. it has decent s/w library. you can directly open ovi store from phone and install the apps from there.

one thing I am sure about is that you wont get a better phone inside 10k. if you are music addict, 5235 with unlimited music subscription works even better.

1. Practically unlimited ( depending on memory available ).

2. The initial OVI maps wasn't that good. But the latest build is really awesome. The best part is that it works offline, doesn't take much time to get lock if in outside. Search works like a charm and another utility is you can view any location in map ( as long as you've installed it ) any time without data connection. Besides, this device comes with free lifetime voice navigation. :)

3. For am ARM 11 with 128MB RAM, it rather works very good. I don't notice any lag unless open more than 5-6 apps. ( I use opera mini and I can open at least 5 tabs of full website w/o any hick ups :) )Multitasking is that good. And the benefit of having relatively lower specs to the other smart phones, it gives very decent battery backup. With the latest firmware, I can use at least 4 days ( I switch it off for 7-8 hrs at night ) with normal use like 30-35 minutes calls, 40-50 sms and a couple of hours music.

4. No. It doesn't come with any pdf / office viewer. You have to buy quickoffice ( or get it *Ahem* :P ). The free pdf readers are pathetic.

5 No DivX / Xvid support in the default real player. Any mp4, wmv is supported upto the 640x360 resolution.

6. Ovi stores is not Android market that's true. But there are enough apps for your need. And the best feature is that you can install any signed app ( even you can develop your own ). There are many websites to get free apps ( .sis / .sisx ) and you can install them from your pc too. Except the office viewer / editor, you won't probably need any paid apps.

I bought this phone @8.4k and still I feel every rupee I spent was worth it. There isn't simple any other full touch smart phone with GPS and 3G under 10k right now.

You can post here / pm me for any other query. :)

Thanks guys for the information. 2 questions:

1. Have you guys never faced the restart problem? On stock firmware, or updated to latest firmware?

2. Is there a way to run s60 applications which are not updated to use touch UI? Some way to simulate a key-press (0-9, *, #, select-key) , even though it is a touch-screen and the keys are not present?

I am especially worried about mobipocket reader which I use a lot. Any-one here using mobipocket reader on touch-screen s60? Or any other good reader which is touch-screen ready?

thanks

You should be able to get the Nokia 5230 for 7.5k now . Plz see to it you get the latest stock May 2010 packed or later as it now comes with data cable, 2GB card and Car Holder. May be u can give back the 2GB card to shop and take an 8GB for some 600 bucks extra. All in all for 8k with the 8GB card, data cable and Car Holder should be a kick ass deal :D

I am storing my messages still in the phone memory and currently i have a little over 1000 SMS Messages.

2. How good/bad is the OVI maps ? I heard it wasn't able to fetch location in couple of reviews. Will it work with Tata Docomo / Vodafone?

I am using the following maps application and my personal rating is as follows

1. Garmin XT (navigation purpose and mainly for locating places as it is very good)

2. Google Maps (No voice navigation, but latest satellite maps so that is an advantage and very accurate representation, can also guide with direction over maps)

3. OVI Maps (have used it once for navigation, felt good, voice instructions not as extensive as Garmin, but you can do with this if you do not install any 3rd party maps app)

4. Sygic Maps (I am sure it finds its place its place above but since i have not used it much i am not commenting)

PM me if you need pointers to install sygic maps.

3. How is the performance of the phone ? Does it hangs now and then ? raksrules was mulling over some restarting problem in the 5230 thread.

In general i am satisfied with its performace but still i am facing the ocassional restarting problem. It happens mainly while changing any settings or messaging only. But be assured about this. Its a non issue

4. Does it have pdf support ? How much is the file size limit ?

By default no. Have to install 3rd party apps, Size support not not known

5. What video format it supports ?

3GP/MP4 by default i guess. AVI using smartmovie. Rest i dont know. And yes real media

6. How diverse is the software libre ? How am I suppose to install ?

Software Library is pretty diverse and i would really recommend using the "SPB mobile shell" app as it provides an awesome homescreen. I like it very much.

Thanks guys for the input.

Just went today to Nokia Priority Dealer and inquired about the 5230 and it was not available, he will confirm about it tomorrow.

BTW just stumbled upon 5530 and was blown away by the build quality and features. How worth is 5530 over 5230 considering a 3k difference in the price of both ?

Nokia 5530 lacks 3G and has wi-fi instead and uses a smallish 2.9" screen when compared to 5230.

You gonna get a 10k without 3G :S

5530xm when compared to 5230 : no 3g, no gps, smaller display, less talktime, better camera and still it costs 3k more. that's totally confusing :)
5530XM has wi-fi and if IINM has better headphones out of the box. But going for a 10k phone without 3G!!! There are better options at that price point.
