Got my hands on Dead or Alive 5 today.
First DOA game I ever bought and no didn't buy it to watch jelly filled b**bs. I wanted to buy Virtua Fighter 5 for a while but I bought the console too late and it has disappeared from local stores. Found out that DOA is somewhat similar. VF series has Punch, Kick and Block and DoA series has 1 extra button Throw.
Ordered both via E-Bay but DoA arrived today. I hope I get VF 5 by Monday.
The fighting/gameplay is seriously fun when you get used to the fact that there is only 1 button for 1 action. After starting the game I immediately stormed into an online match thinking just 2 buttons Punch and Kick what can go wrong? Answer - everything.
After a bit of training started with the story mode. The cut-scenes play out like MK 9 but the story is ridiculous.
The cutscenes are a joke (B**bs move more than Lips) and so are some of the characters in them. They fight for the silliest reasons and some are just annoying. For e.g., Kasumi's chapter - She is searching for her clone. 1 second she picks a fight with someone in New York the next Cutscene she is in Antartica - WTF? Is she searching for someone or just lost herself and how lost is she?
The fights in the story mode are nothing but extended training missions. In each fight you have to perform a particular move for a particular number of times to complete the bonus mission. You can ignore the bonus missions if you want to but might as well do them if you are fighting the story mode. In some cases it works like a handicap especially if you have to depend on the opponent to do a particular attack and the AI doesn't use that attack. You are then forced to loose the match or beat the AI move on and come back and repeat the exercise.
Characters don't have individual endings like MK or Tekken (May be at the end of story didn't get there yet but not in arcade mode). Finishing Arcade with a character only unlocks a new costume for that character.
Like MK9 there are Tag Team matches. A simple press of button 'Throw' does the trick of switching characters. Funny thing is - If you use 'Throw' button only both players attack the opponent and do a throw attack. If you do 'Punch + Kick + Hold/Guard' only characters switch (that is what the tutorial said).
The booklet has an online pass code but the game never asked me for the code for online play. I wonder if that has anything to do with the 1.02 patch? I am sure the code does something but what I don't know at the moment.
Characters I like so Far -
Eliot - May be shorter than other characters but has some good kick attacks combined with punches and throws.
Mila - Reminds me of Vanessa (KoF). Fast punches and powerful kicks. Can do good damage with grappling (If it somehow connects).
Characters I hate so Far -
Brad Wong - The Drunken Master of DOA. Looks like a mix of Baek (Tekken) and Shun (VF). Not everyone can pull it off. Second only to Bo'Rai Cho. Both should take lessons from Shu Di or Chin (KoF).
Jann Lee - I like Bruce Lee inspired characters in fighting games - Marshall Law, Liu Kang, Maxi and Fei Long. Jann Lee is not one of them. Move-set wise he looks pretty good but he is like Bruce Lee who has had too much coffee with too much sugar. Will stay away from him.
Have unlocked Akira and Sarah (haven't used them yet). Will use them later when I get VF 5 to compare how differently they play out in both games.
God knows how many trophies this game has because every other second you get a trophy.
The DLCs don't add anything substantial except ridiculous costumes so no point in buying DLCs or waiting for a complete edition.

Some questions regarding other Fighting games -
SSF4 Arcade edition -
I am focusing only on Ryu at the moment as there are a number of characters in the games with similar move-set. I am unable to do the ultra combos with the controller. How to best pull of ultra combos in this game?
MK 9 -
Finished the story mode. Where or how do I watch all the cut-scenes?
