@ quad >> Whoa.... thnx a ton mate... thats loads of info :P

@ Switch >> Umm... so a CM690 should be brought or not ?

I'll replace the 9600T with an 8800GT no issues...

Processor is smthing that i am totally confused on now... >> :/

Buy it.. :)

But as I said u'll need at least 4good 120mm fans..

RAM really not much of a concern for me :P

Lets boil it down to this >>

Should i get a Q6600 or an E8400 >> considring that i wont upgrade for the next 3 years atleast...

Buy a Q9300 or wait n get the Q9450 instead..

E8400 beats the Quad only in Gaming n ~ apps..

The reverse for Rendering..

1. Get a good cabby. The CM690 is a good investment. I don't know how you are getting it for 4.6k there. Too high. I got a quote of 4.6k for the one with the trasnparent side panel shipped via DTDC to me all the way from Chandigarh from a dealer named Amarbir.

2. Asus P5NE-SLI has only x8 SLI na ? Or is it x16 ? Its quite a buggy board with lots of FSB holes from what I had read. I would not recommend this board. Go for a P35 based mobo such as the Abit IP35-E or Biostar P35.

3. You really will not over clock ? Its pretty easy to OC the dual core Penryn chips. They run pretty cool too. And you can easily hit 4G or so with them with a decent P35 board and that will give you lots of raw power.

4. I would suggest a dual core chip as you are mostly going to be gaming and listening to music.

5. Get DDR2 RAM with tight latencies like 4-4-4-12 or lower. Timings do make a difference.

6. 9600GT is a pretty decent card. Buying the GPU also depends upon what resolution will you be gaming at. Of course the 8800GT is a better card but then it all depends on your budget and requirements. Try grabbing a good second hand deal as well.

EDIT : But if you really think you won't upgrade the processor for like 3-4 years, then, go for a quad. Wait for the Intel price drops and grab a Q6600 or Q6700 or whatever is in your budget then. The Q9300 has a really sad multi which is why I won't recommend it. And you might get some cool deals on TE as well when the prices crash.

It does not take a month. Maybe a week or ten days. It happened in the past. Indian distris were quick to acknowledge the price drops.

Icy i do agree...but also check switch post.....i found that too meaningfull..not to overspend on proccy.....thats the reason i jus bought e6750(2nd hand) though had the budget enough to buy quad core or e8400...

Proccy market is changing jus like mobile these days.....atleast u can change the proccy after 1 year.....also when price cuts ard u see plenty of proccy on sale in market section...i guess ull see q6600 frm vivek on sale (jus my prediction jus like stocks)..lolz....i guess he will go fo even better proccy i guess..

Also i guess somewhere down the line price of 8800gt will fall(in coming 1-2 months).....my justification is that in us sites they are being sold for ard 180$ with MIR...also heard somewhere 3870 price cut again ard...so it might cost ard 7-8k......so i guess u will surely see a big fall in that.....i m also waiting for same till may end if it doesnt ill go with the price...as my gfx card warranty expires late this year

I am geeting the 8800GT instead of the 9600.. no probs....

If i get the E8400 >> you guys think it would be good enough for the next 2 yrs atleast ??

It will be able to chug along for at least mid 2009. And if you feel it bogging down, you can overclock it by a few hundred mhz.

But the important point right now is the launch of Nehalem and the way this processors is going to change CPU architecture. Nehalem definitely come by the beginning of 2009. These processors will probably finish off dual-cores and move whole IT industry to quad-cores.

After 2009 we will be beginning to see software and platform really optimized for quads.

But then Nehalem is different from the existing quads. The new processors will entail change in platform and will bring new mobos and new set of instructions.

This will time of "tock" and the new architecture will last till 2011.

Now coming to your question, both q6600 (it's already a little dusty) and E8400 are going to be old by Q1 2009. But IMO, because E8400 has newer set of instructions, higher speed and more tweaked architecture it will last a little longer than q6600 unless we are talking about specific applications that can use Q6600's four cores.

icy right now its vfm...and ya it wont be outdated or something but after 6-8 months when nehalem(though its server end stuff) comes...the desktop model will easily overcome it(no point discussing that as earlier suggested).....btw if u trying to get your hands on e8400 get it quick reading on many places it has totally vanished especially in europe....and e8200 review suggest its not as good oc as e8400
