Storage Solutions Firewire or USB 2.0? And some other questions..

I have a WD MyBook Home Edition 500 GB external HDD. Since it has USB 2.0 as well as Firewire ports. I use the Firewire port while for the desktop and the USB port while connecting to the laptop ( cos it bugs me to reach out to the back of the PC and yank out the USB port from the desktop and connect it to the laptop every time I want to connect the laptop).
Now my question is this . ..

1.I have not noticed any changes in data transfer between the firewire and the USB ports. But a weird thing occurs when I connect it using the Firewire pot to my desktop .. The disk heats up pretty quickly. Is this an issue or is it just my feeling ....?

2. Is it ok to leave the disk connected while I switch on and switch of the system? Will it cause any damage to the disk if the disk is always connected to the system (even while switching off and switching on) ?
