It’s amazing how our perception changes over time. Back in the olden days of consumer electronics, we used to envision gadgets that would have everything we would ever want in a single device. And nowadays, we actually see those devices. One example of such products includes portable audio players. Portable audio players have evolved from supporting just uploaded audio files to photos, video, recording, FM tuner and much more to enhance the overall experience. Not to mention, cell phones are in a similar transition. Gone are the days of making calls with cell phones. Today, they are an all around entertainment hub for people who are willing to take advantage of such features.
Due to this transition (justified or not), we actually want products that are pure and simple at what they do. For those of us who regularly test and interact with latest consumer electronics, we sincerely miss that innocence products once had. As a result, we are ecstatic to see Creative come up with a simpler theme with its newly announced Zen V MP3 player.
Zen V clearly looks different in the most simplistic form from other players in the market. The exterior of the unit is crisp with an instilled balance of color themes. The display is powered by OLED technology for extra brightness; it’s also scratch resistant, a great feature to have for any CE device in the market. Similar to other players, Creative Zen V supports line-in recording, displays time, lets you setup an alarm, acts as a removable storage device for storing documents, has a one touch navigation joystick, which should make navigation a breeze, eight presets, custom EQ settings, simplified transfer mechanism and much more.
Zen V also has support for photos (JPEG and Album Art), audio formats (MP3, WMA, WMA DRM and IMA ADPCM), 1.5" display, 128x128 resolution, up to 15 hours of battery life with a rechargeable battery, built-in microphone, USB 2.0 connectivity and a number of other features.
Clearly, it’s not the most advanced audio player in the market by any measure. While we are still excited by its simplicity and Creative’s desire to go back to personal audio roots, those of you looking for the most advanced player will be disappointed.
Creative’s Zen V is available in two main colors, comes in 1GB and 2GB capacities (flash based) and costs $299.00 for the 2GB version.
