Okay so I was wonderiing if there is a way to play FLAC tracks on my ipod touch ? It's the 4th generation model and has been jailbroken. If there is an application which i can use, please let me know that too. Also could somebody suggest a source where I could get FLAC tracks ?

Convert to Apple lossless?

FLAC was the only reason I picked the 5g over the new touch.

Try VLC , maybe it supports FLAC on the iPhone ? Don't go to Apple Lossless , its too restrictive unless you don't mind keeping dual copies of your music.

No man, dual copies are frigging irritating, im doing this because I want to unleash the complete potential of the device with respect to sound quality ! How do i do the apple lossless thing ? Couldnt find it.

even i want to know about the source from where we can download FLAC files..

There aren't too many sources for downloading FLACs.. most providers stick to mp3.

The best would possibly be to get your own CDs and rip.

Karan , completely OT but just out of curiosity ..are you able to easily distinguish between a FLAC and a 320 kbps MP3 file sourced from the same FLAC file ? Try doing a blind test using ABX in foobar and you might be surprised . I personally haven't found FLACs to have a huge difference compared to 320 MP3s especially on IEMs and portable gear . Maybe with a very high-end DAC,amp speaker combo its noticeable easily.

+1 I fell for the bandwagon tried a lot of flac files compared them to the 320 mp3's found no difference at all. Eventually gave up and stuck to 320's

I however DID feel a difference. Hard to describe but mp3 files feel a bit empty. Its difficult to judge this between 320kbps ones but any lower and it just doesn't feel the same. I keep two separate libraries. My top most favorite music is in FLAC rest in mp3. If i care enough to get a discography , i will have it in FLAC else its in mp3.

Faheem, I'll tell you why i cam up with this. The thing is while yes most the times my ipod is used for my using with iems but about once in three days I plug into my dads Bose 3.2.1 through aux in and then the difference is noticeable between a FLAC and mp3. But again most of my mp3 tracks are 128/256, only about 10% of those are 320 since I handpick songs from an album and only keep those rather than adding unnecesarry files in my library. So while finding 320 kbps tracks is as difficult as FLAC I thought maybe I should give it a try. But I'll take your word for the fact that 320 kbps is as good or negligibly less in terms of quality. But even then its always good to know about it, have no experience with lossless.

I can't figure out the difference on my earphones, however when I switch to my music system, the difference is obvious for tracks with a lot of instrumentals.

^ True the ones lesser than 320 kbps (especially 128) do feel hollow and inferior in SQ(lack of authority in bass/sparkle in treble) compared to FLACs.Even though the difference for me is almost negligible with most IEMs , for desktop- Denon AH-D2000 listening , I prefer FLACs of atleast my favourite artists/albums or complete discographies.

Ok i checked VLC player can't play flac files. I could add flac files to my phone but they din't show up. And the wierd part is that now I cannot even delete it. Glad I transferred only one Flac track otherwise, bye bye 500mb of space.

^^ Lol.. Yea you saved some space there.Isnt there any application which one can use on an ipod for flac playback ?
Or is rockbox the only option ?

No other option.....start converting your collection to ALAC or 320kbps. I would suggest go delete your flac after ripping them to ALAC cause once you go 320 you cannot go back.

Or plan B is to start making new threads in the FS section :P
