Firstly, for those who are not in the loop, the FCC earlier this year came up with new rules for wireless radios on WiFi routers - mainly in order to ensure that they do not operate outside their licensed frequencies. The easiest way to do this, as usual, is to ensure that you cannot install third party stuff on your devices - however the FCC never meant for this to happen. However, now there are reports of manufacturers enabling signed updates only, which would ensure that you cannot install third party firmware easily.
