I have a 500 GB Maxtor external HDD and it was working fine till today morning. I was downloading some torrent files on to a folder named "torrents" in it and due to power failure had to restart my comp without "safely removing hardware". After that I can't see the "torrents" folder although the amount of disk space left indicates that it is still there.

I also used the recover my files software and it shows that folder is still there and I copied the folder to another drive in the computer but the problem is even if I recover the folder how do I regain the space on my external HDD? How can I see the folder again?

Somebody please help with some step-by step instructions. I am newbie as far tech stuff goes.

Thanks

P.S. NO folders are hidden.

try checking the disk using chkdsk at cmd, that might help. As you have mention that you had restarted you system when the system was using your HDD, this may corrupt your HDD:(

Thanks CA50. It didn't help unfortunately.

That's it!!! so much for help!!!! That is all from you techie guys. Disappointing :) 1 post for a query.

i had problems like yours with my corsair flash voyager pen drive and my old hitachi external drive and in both cases such repeated disappearance of folders/files meant that the hdd/pen drive was abt to conk off.

i used knoppix/ubuntu live distros to read and transfer the files to another pendrive or location on my harddrive.

its time to run hdtach and check your drive. try to get it rmaed if it is in warranty.

Try using CHKDSK and defragmenttig. Ty using Ubuntu Live CD if you can see all the files take a backup and try reformatting.

It is not advisable to download directly on external HDD's as they are easily susceptible to corruption.
