Well guys after deciding on a rig, the main question is which windows to use? Because you dont wont to format after installing one :P
On a gaming aspect which windows would be better considering a medium reg? Windows xp or windows 7 (considering ONLY 64-bit, as 32-bit limits you)
On analysis Windows 7 outperforms XP, but thats on a high-end config. As to what I have heard, on a medium rig, a 64-bit windows 7 becomes really slow.
I'm gonna buy
amd phenom II X4 945
gigabyte GA-880GA-UD3H
nvidia GTX 460
corsair-1600C9 4gb(2*2gb)
seagate barracuda 7200 1TB
Considering this, would windows 7 x64 work fine?

Yes, Windows 7 would run flawlessly on your Config. Go ahead with the 64 bit , because the Phenom 2 945 is a 64-bit processor and is compatible with 64-bit operating systems. Wait for other members to comment.

I have a 965 and 4gb ram of 1333mhz , windows 7 64bit runs pretty smooth (not extremely smooth) , but more importantly all the games run smoothly as in there is no trouble playing the game due to OS ( the gpu constraint is a diff issue )

Go ahead and install windows 7 and njoy gaming :)

ok, thnx mate :)

also wanted to know as to should i buy a PSU? I mean do i really need it? Coz i dont think that anyone uses it and neither do I. I dont want to spend 3-4k just for the heck of it and if it just creats a minor difference as I have budget constraits :P

This should be asked in your threads in the Hardware section, but anyway ..

Every system uses a PSU whether you're aware of its presence or not. It cannot run without one.

Most people who get their systems assembled stick to the bundled PSU that comes with their cabinet. These bundled PSUs are generic entry level designs re-badged under 101 brands (Mercury, Zebronics, Intex, etc). They have inflated ratings (400W is more likely 100W), poor voltage regulation (12V fluctuates beyond the +/-10% limit), poor components, poor QC, etc etc.

Throw in a mid to high-end GPU or any high powered component, and you can kiss your PSU goodbye. Since these PSUs are entry level designs, they don't have OVP, OCP or any other safety mechanism to shut it down in case of an overload - so you can kiss devices connected to it goodbye as well. Hope you get the pic now - it will cost you much much more than just 3-4k in the long run :P

As a rule of thumb, 10% of your PC budget should go towards a PSU.

And if you're on a tight budget, you're better off cutting down on any of the other components but not the PSU.

Alright, thnx mate. That was quite helpful. I'm planning to to buy a 500W FSP saga II 500W. Thats ok right, considering the rig that i'm going to get (mentioned in the opening post)?

Biggest reason i'm still with Win XP is Win 7 performs better on mid/high end specs.

By the looks of it looks like a extreme power only :) , another guy jumps in the well with me :P

but m plotting a way out , will come out of the well soon ;)

i dont know if its extreme power or not, i just told the guy cooler master 500W, the price is 2400rs. Looking at the price can u tell me?

Even if you have a simple Core 2 Duo E7xxx with a ATI 4xxx series card, Win 7 64 should be the better bet provided you have 4 GB RAM and provided you either game at DX9/10 or whichever setting brings you the ideal FPS. Rest assured, besides the directx version, the settings at which you can play on Win 7 if at all just may be better! :)

@n3nimbus

Yes its extreme power edition , i am running my machine on 600 watt cooler master extreme power edition , but reading reviews and suggestions of forums I would certainly like to change it before i add a new card to my system sometime later

If you have a GTX 570 get at least a HX620 or better. Though I would recommend a CM SilentPower/Corsair HX/Seasonic 800 watts or more keeping in mind future upgradability, overclocking etc!

@rite

The OP has a gtx 460 a vx450 also would suffice , and as far as i am concerned :) i wont be buying anothing higher than a 6850(budget wise) :) so a vx 550 should suffice for me

Even for a GTX 460 + oced Core i5 2500 I would suggest a Corsair VX 550 (old one) or TX650 (old one) or Seasonic 600 watts!

LOL same here, i'm going for corsair GS 600W, its a bit costly, but reading all the info that never compromise on your PSU, i think it would be worth it. U also do the same. btw the GS series is meant for gaming. :) Will let you know the price of it today. :)
