For whom is iOS and for whom is Android ?

@OP, I'm no Fanboy of Apple either but for you I think iOS (iPad) will be better, you will receive timely updates for a longer period and simple out of the box to use, like you said Purchase and Forget thing.
In Android you need to spend some time to understand tweaking (again pretty simple if you can spare some time) but the main problem of Android may be of updates due to its fragmentation in nature (means you may not receive timely updates depending upon your manufacturer)

You just mentioned that you will use it for an educational app. I suggest that you try the Maddie and Matt app. It caters to kids for them to learn about good manners and values. Try it!
