hi frnds,

I have an avi file with its subtitle file in .srt format.
I named the avi file as abc.avi and the subtitle file as abc.srt and tried to play it on my Passion M-38 dvd player (they were in the same directory), but the subtitle file is not recognized by the player.

Is there any specific format in which I need to name the subtitle file like abc.en.srt or something so that it is recognized by the dvd player?

I remember reading somewhere that I need not combine both these files before writing it onto a dvd. the player automatically recognizes the format and picks it up. does this really work, if so how? please help.

Hey buddy,

I had tried a lot regarding this & as far as i know, the avi file u download & also the srt file should have the exactly same name. It works on my PC. I have lots of movies with subtitles working fine on my Sony DVD Player. It's not a thing of the player but some problem with the subtitle or avi naming.

Delete the srt file. Download it again. Put it in the same folder as d .avi. Then, F2 the name of the avi & copy it & paste it to srt file.

If u have Windows Media Player, u can try running the movie first in WMP to see that the subtitles are working fine and then burn.

Give a try. It should work.

dude thnks for your help,
I tried that out... but WMP itself does not show the subtitles.
does it need to have any supporting codecs. As far as I know the new WMP has all such codecs already in built in it.
ny ideas?

did u choose the onscreen menu option in the dvd player to show subtitiles?

by default i dont think dvd player will show subs!

Huh... kind of weird, I just posted this in another thread... make sure the subs are in the correct format, you can convert them if you need to using vobsub, if that doesn't work.... then try hard encoding them as below....

If you want to add them permanently, do the following. You will have to render the whole movie and re-compress it, but the dubs will be hard coded into the movie.

Download VirtualDub, and open avi file.

Make sure your subs are in .ssa format. If not use SubResync which is a part of the vobSub program, to convert subs to .ssa.

Under the video menu in VirtualDub, click on Filters ( It will be grayed out if you do not have the full compression settings on.)

Click on add, and select subtitler, then it will prompt you to open your .ssa file.

Click on ok, and there you go......

This assumes you have some knowledge to set the compression settings yourself. I would suggest installing the latest version of DIVX, then you will be able to choose from the DIVX presets in the compression settings.

For DVD Player, you have named the files correctly. Maybe your DVD Player itself is not capable of displaying SRT subtitles. Before making that conclusion, please make sure that SRT file is not corrupt. It should open in notepad - subtitles should be readable and in proper SRT format.

To see subtitles while playing AVI in Computer, use 'VLC Media Player' for playback. Install Vobsub if you want to stick to WMP for playback. Codecs have nothing to do with subtitles.

by correct format if you mean a .srt format then it is.
Before I try hard encoding them I'd like to try out a few more options first... I'll see if .sub or .txt can make any difference, though I'm not very sure it will.

the srt files are absolutely fine. I can open them in a notepad and the text is very much readable. they play fine in the VLC player.

I'm starting to have doubts on the dvd player. gotta reconfirm with ppl using the same one.

Hey hav u selected the subtitles thingy in the setur of the player???

Enable it..please report back on this..

Then u can view them..

ALso sometime my subtitles used to go off on their own will..lol

tired the osd and a few buttons and they used to return...

Dont remember wat exactly makes it come back since i didn do it wid much concentration, as i hardly use subtitles...but srt format works fine...

Well i havent read the discussion completely.

But here are my suggestions

FOR PC

Uninstall other codec packs and install only Klite Codec Pack latest

OR

If u dont want to take the risk of uninstalling ur current codecs just

Download KMPlayer it will play ur movie with the subtitle easily.

For DVD Player

1.> Firstly does ur player itself support subtitles is the main question.

2.> Check in its preferences if u have enabled subtitle support , it might be disabled.

3.> Rename .avi and .srt using F2 as mentioned above

4.> It shud play if its supported.

I am assuming both ur AVI and .SRT files are not corrupted by any chance.

I don't at all think dat DVD Player is a problem.

First install Vobsub.

Den, click on the avi. It will open in WMP & u can see the subtitles. Just check once if u can see a green arrow on the right side of XP taskbar. If it's dere, Vobsub is installed & working fine.

No need to enable subtitles in WMP options. These are not actually the subtitles in DVD for which u have to enable it.

Why i said to check in WMP is if u can see it here, any DVD Player would show it widout a doubt.

Now, if it works, look out for an ... button on the DVD Player remote or something similar. Click on this & subtitles would start displaying. When i first tried to run it on my Sony, I forgot this i couldn't see the subs but once i pressed this, i could see it. So, u can also try d same.

Don't worry, it would work. :ohyeah:

Just keep ur patience mate.:)

If u are from Bangalore, i can show u how to do it. But are u from here?

Does your DVD player supports sutitles in SRT format, many players does not do that... There are a many kinda formats sub, plain txt etc........

Refer your dvd manual ..........

I just put up a guide to hardcode subs if you want to. I was having the same problem with my Samsung DVD/DIVX player... thats' why I decide to to hardcode subs in a bunch of movies... in the end it was just easier than all of the fiddling (and there was a movie I really wanted to watch, but couldn't get to work right) :D

thnx for all ur help frnds :thanx: ....with some unexpected miracle it finally worked :)

I tried out installing Vobsub and checking if the subtitles showed up, then got the dvd written and it worked like a charm on the dvd player, though the ones I talked about previously still do not.

I think it must be because of improper naming or coz of being in .sub format.
but as long as the subtitle files are named properly and they are in .srt format it is never a problem.

btw, me too frm b'lore mate....I stay near Koramangala, 1st Blk. wht about you?
