AWS Free Usage Tier
Came across this, and thought I should post it here.
It sounds good, except if you cross the free limit, and then the amounts directly charged to your credit card.
But for a small/new site it could be a good alternative to conventional hosting.

Has anyone used amazon? How's their hosting/billing?

I had used Amazon EC2 to host a facebook application developed by one of the start-ups I used to work in.
I had used the free tier applicable to linux servers for the first one year. From then on I guess its "pay as you go".
As you said its pretty good to host small apps/sites which does not require a lot of computing power (since they are providing only the micro instance for free).

Amazon EC2 is enterprise grade cloud hosting platform. so performance & uptime is top notch but you will have to remember its Self-Managed. so compared to shared hosting, there is no support in terms of software issues. you are on your own. this means you need quite good with managing servers.

And Don't forget, you have provide your Credit Card at time of signup. so incase you go above your limit(crazy script or ddos attack), then they will charge your credit card.

I am currently running my Ubuntu server VPS over landscape.canonical.com which also supports Amazon EC2/S3 and EBS :D

I've signed up for the full 1-year free stuff using a virtual credit card of one-time limit of Rs ONE hahaha, so those monkeys cannot charge me more even if they wanted to.

Using the "backup-manager" script to do weekly backups from my VPS straight to the S3 5gb free storage heh.

Running a micro EC2 instance which has the EBS 10gb storage attached, woohoo.

CLOUD COMPUTING FULL SPEED AHEAD BABY!!!!
