Security Software Free and Paid Antivirus - Which one to choose?

@Haddock, I used MSE for 6 months some 1.5 years back. I was also in impression that MSE is from microsoft and I will be out of troubles. But one of my friend brought a dangerous virus in 3 pendrives and scanned with MSE(fully updated), Norton, Avira even AVG, all av detected the virus but MSE didn't. He kept saying that my AV isn't good but I was in impression of Microsoft AV .After removing MSE, installed nod32/KIS, it detected more than 200 viruses. lol :D :P But do u know what funny thing was, when I do scanning it didn't find much viruses and I was happy that my system is virus-free.

Microsoft security essentials is the best for a free and light anti virus...it does not hog a lot of system resources and its basically free for windows genuine users.

I also used GDATA, it was very good(-KIS). It uses 2 AV engines(1 from Bitdefender, 1 from Avira) but it terribly slows down the PC. I favouring KIS becaz of its smartness capability, simplest user interface and it also have very good detection rate, thats why nearly 120+ companies are using it(as advertised). One of my friend got infected using avira(disabled protection due some work), later avira was unable to remove them, he tried bitdefender online scan but result was in vain so he borrowed my KIS 2010 and removed the viruses successfully. I use KIS 2011 + Spy Sweeper.
And Avira is the best in free category but sometimes it unable to remove viruses though it catches and stop them.

Just one security software is never quite enough.

I used Avira + Spybot (Never let it start along with system) + Sandboxed browser.

Pretty much saved me from viruses. Avira is good enough to block thos that come out from Pendrives and SYpbot scan pretty much eradicates every other threat .

Also instaleld SUPER Antispyware and Malware bytes but I let them start every month. Update + Full system scan . 3 Year and they've saved from every possible infection.

And best part is they're all free.

I have finally settled with free AV + Firewall for now.

Currently using Comodo Internet Security & Microsoft Security Essentials in conjunction and I am truly satisfied. The firewall in CIS is simple to use (with one click blocking of applications) though initially it did ask me for a lot of permissions on one of my systems.

After some recommendations in TE I started using Microsoft Security Essentials (after removing KIS).... and this is amazingly good..

Too light, too awesome.. nicely detects the crap and update is also smart...
