I recently installed AVG Free edition on my laptop, how good is this antivirus solution?
But that aside, Im facing problems with the update manager of AVG. When I try updating, a message - "Invalid update control CTF file" gets displayed. I don't know what this means & how to solve the problem! Please help my on this guys.

Also, I installed an antivirus named "Rising" on my other laptop, it is also a free version. How is this antivirus, is it good enough?

& which is better AVG or Avast antivirus(free editions)?

Thanks.

@teche, search for the error message on google, you will find instructions to delete stale CTF files in an AVG folder and then the update will start working again...

Like vishalrao mentioned ..... You need to remove the CTF temp files in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Avg8\update\download. Only remove the avginfo files that end with .ctf....

if ur looking for a "free" "legit" av solution,

get avira if you dont require an email scanner (for people who use outlook etc) as it is not included in the free version.

otherwise, get avast.

Thanks, I guess Avast would suit me.

^^ +1 I have been using Avira for past 2 years now. Great performance.

Thanks, so now I am considering Avira due to numerous suggestions.

Hi Techies, Im facing another problem, the AVG free edition installed on my lappy taks ~9hr to scan my Laptop!
Does this mean that my lappy has been infected by viruses or is something else wrong?

Run a full system scan in safe mode. It's possible that the some on-going housekeeping operations by other programs are interfering with the scan.

Open Process Explorer, quit/terminate all unnecessary programs and disable any HDD activity monitors that might be running in the background (usual case on most laptops). See if that helps.

Scans generally take a long time and it also depends on your lappy config too. For fastest scans to a boot time scan as Gforce mentioned. Otherwise kill all unnecessary processes and then do the scan. If it still takes 9 hrs then its your lappy. :P

Thanks guys, I started the scan again today & it reads:
Objects scanned - 332955
Elapsed time ~ 11hrs.
Currently scanning registry

Isn't 11hrs way more than usual, what to do?
Should I dump AVG & install some other free Antivirus solution?

^^ What is running under that laptop? Celeron with 256MB RAM? :D

Try using another A/V solution. Do you have a proper firewall running on your laptop? If you don't have one, give Comodo's free internet suite a try. Their firewall was rated as the second best in the recent Matousec test and their A/V is pretty nice.

If you prefer a standalone firewall and A/V, get Online Armor firewall (#1 rated) and choose from Avira or Avast A/Vs. I would recommend Avast since it provides AV, AS and rootkit protection. In addition, install Malwarebytes (Freeware) to protect yourself from nasty spam that might get missed by free antivirus engines.

If you can spare a few hundred bucks, get yourself a copy of Kaspersky A/V or Kaspersky internet suite 2009. Both are highly rated but of course the A/V only product does not have a firewall.
