Trying to put a 2MBps unlimited connection to good use...

I am sure most, if not all, of you have been to freevideolectures.com. If not, it is a site that has links to all/many free video lectures available on the net. All students of science, engineering, maths etc have a lot to gain by watching these videos, especially since these are from the worlds best institutes - MIT, Stanford, IIT, IISc etc - which means it would be better than the fare available in most colleges.

I plan to offer a free download service. You provide the URLs and I download and ship the DVDs to you. You will pay for the DVDs at Rs. 20/DVD and shipping at actuals.

Ideally, I would hope that all those who have similar connections chip in, and we can have "hubs" all over the country so that the DVDs do not have to undertake a long journey to the buyer which could damage them.

Ideally, I would also hope that those who do order the DVDs take care of local demand - make copies for the needy who are close by without having to approach the nearest "hub".

Ideally, I would also hope that all those in the science stream end up understanding their subjects better due to the videos, and end up as better scientists/engineers/doctors etc.

Ideally, I would also hope that those who gave up on science and maths because of lousy instructors in school, take a look at these lectures and make a fresh start.

Ideally, I would also hope that this thread be made a sticky, till the last person in need of these DVDs gets them.

Just post here with a list of URLs you need downloaded, and I'll get back to you.

List of courses already downloaded
1. MIT Physics 8.01 - Classical Mechanics -
2. MIT Physics 8.02 - Electricity and Magnetism
3. MIT Physics 8.03 - Vibration and Waves
4. MIT 18.03 - Differential Equations
5. MIT 5.111 - Principles of Chemical Science
5. MIT 5.112 - Principles of Chemical Science - Advanced Course
6. MIT - Introduction to Bioengineering.

Whoa

Ideally, I would also hope that those who gave up on science and maths because of lousy instructors in school, take a look at these lectures and make a fresh start.

Golden words

Awesome initiative

Show the kind man some love people

Dont we already have an overpopulation in science courses with crazy high cutoff's??
More people need to take commerce, science is already overpopulated..(with the premier institutes like IIT's having a selection rate of 1 in 200, and even private colleges taking only about 1 in 50, science is overloaded in India)

Idea is good, but
1) it should be targeted more to engineering students than school children
2)Copyright issues can cause problems(considering that NPTEL also sells DVD's @Rs 200 per course, dont know about the others..)

I don't get the point.

And yet I respectfully choose to differ with your opinion. :D

People should get into what the hell ever they think they should get into.

What does an area being 'overpopulated' have to do with it ?

Heck, for all I know the field of Science isn't 'populated' enough, because, when I query 'Time Machine' on Ebay, it returns 0 results. :(

what I meant to say was, in India, opportunities for a further career in science, unless you get into an engineering college are limited

as the engineering colleges(the good and average ones atleast) are currently operating at capacity, any additional students in science stream will cause an increase in students not being able to go for higher studies..

same applies for medical.

@akash
Let's just say we have different opinions and move on ;)
And thanks for sharing your's btw :)

@OP
I think I'm going to take the iPhone Dev and Entrepreneurship vids :hap2:
Thank you Prasanna and Gaurish

Sure.. that can be a never ending debate..

I still have doubts about the copyright issue, he should be careful, if he is successful in doing it, and the publishers find out, then there may be trouble..

Here is a website NPTEl offering free video classes for the Engineering field. :cool2:
From Website
The main objective of NPTEL program is to enhance the quality of engineering education in the country by developing curriculum based video and web courses. This is being carried out by seven IITs and IISc Bangalore as a collaborative project. In the first phase of the project, supplementary content for 129 web courses in engineering/science and humanities have been developed. Each course contains materials that can be covered in depth in 40 or more lecture hours. In addition, 110 courses have been developed in video format, with each course comprising of approximately 40 or more one-hour lectures. In the next phase other premier institutions are also likely to participate in content creation.

The NPTEL project, receives its funding support through the National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT) since the year 2009.

The videos are uploaded on to youtbe, which ofcourse can be downloaded :ashamed:

gaurish : Download complete. PM complete address with pincode and phone no. I'll VPP the DVDs tomorrow.

prasanna, rockinruler : Most of the enterpreneurship vids are not downloadable. The mp3 versions are, check this page :Stanford's Entrepreneurship Corner: Podcasts. File sizes are significantly smaller too. I think since most of these "talks" are just that, there really is no need to get the vids. If you disagree, let me know the direct URLs of the vids.

prasanna : I suggest getting the DVDs from NPTEL for the IIT lectures. I'll download the non IIT ones.

Got the DVD, thank you much ! Really appreciate how you are making good use of your bandwidth. Infact I would like to support you.

if anyone wants the 2 DVDs which contain

1)iPhone Application Development Videos

2) Developing Mobile Apps with Web Technologies

I can send them to you immediately:hap2:

I applaud your intention, BUT before you download, rip and ship those DVD's please read about the rights over the video, whether or not the owner/publisher of the video allows commercial/non-commercial distribution. The damages can be quite hefty.

Rest assured if it allowed by author/publisher to rip DVD's and circulate them I can contribute for the northern region with my not-so-fast unlimited broadband connection.
