Free VPN service that works system wide (not restricted to browsers)

Can anyone suggest some free VPN services that will work system wide on my PC / Laptop. It should not be restricted to a specific browser but any app or anything i use on my laptop should access the internet only through the VPN gateway.
Preferably want US VPN.

I have used ultrasurf but i believe it is restricted to the IE browser that it opens. Correct me if wrong.

Any suggestions appreciated.
 
Free VPNs might be restricting speeds i guess or bandwidth limited to certain MBs per day etc. I am ok with these restrictions.
 
Also want to known whether any of these free VPNs provide option to put their settings in the wifi router itself so that i don't need to make any changes to the laptop. Also this means all my devices like mobile phone, tablet should also connect through the VPN now (since settings are in the router).

I checked my router's (TPLink TL WR-340G+) specs online and under the special features it is listed that i can configure L2TP,PPTP (whatever these 2 mean) VPN.
