New Delhi, July 01: Got a laptop and head for Connaught Place regularly? Soon you can hit the worldwide web sitting in Central Park, once the Delhi Cabinet approves the decision to make the heart of the Capital Wi-Fi enabled. The plan also involves creating 40 special kiosks, where those without laptops can surf the Internet and shop online.
The good bit: It’s all for free.
The slight caveat: E-mails cannot be sent from these kiosks for security reasons  20 kiosks each will be created for surfing and e-commerce.
The Delhi Government has tied up with Cisco and Airtel for the technological end of the project, dubbed ‘Un-Wire Connaught Place’.
Newsline had first reported about the initiative last July. A Cabinet note is has been prepared for final approval.
With security tightened in the light of terrorism activities and threats through the Web  even cyber cafes are now required to check user identity  Delhi government officials said a unique ID would be created for those using Wi-Fi at CP. “Security agencies are insisting that people visiting cyber cafes reveal their identity, so using the Wi-Fi facility has to be monitored to prevent its misuse,†an official said.
To ensure user identity is foolproof, service providers will asks those willing to use Wi-Fi facilities in CP to send their cellphone numbers to get a login. The password would then be SMSed to users, officials said.
In kiosks meant only for surfing, users will be let in for a limited time to “ensure Internet is not misusedâ€. As for the other 20 kiosks where e-commerce will be allowed, users’ credit card will help in the authentication process, the official said.
According to officials, the kiosks will be built in Palika Bazaar, petrol pumps and the underground parking so that CP’s aesthetics is not marred.
Officials said all necessary permissions have been sought from various agencies, including NDMC which manages the area.
Explaining the technology, Cisco’s lead strategic consultant (government and defence) Harshdeep Marwah said the company would use cutting-edge Wi-Mesh technology. “Besides free Internet, the technology would help build infrastructure that can be used by the authorities for mobile video surveillance, traffic light management and others,†Marwah said.
Airtel would provide Internet bandwidth.
For revenue generation, officials said home page of the computer monitors used in the kiosks would carry advertisements and other announcements of shops and local traders.
