Friends wants to buy Smartphone in USA - any suggestions ?

A friend who is on a trip to USA has asked me for a suggestion for a PDA/Smartphone like the Palm Treo ... any suggestions which is a good phone of this type.

I have no idea about these phones so any suggestions will be welcome - he is NOT on a tight budget but he will not buy very expensive phones either.
 
@Icefusion .... My friend is on a visit to USA and will be back in Mumbai shortly... so it is for use in India.

@ultra vires ... I will tell him what you suggested... but is this like the Palm Treo he mentioned ? I have absolutely no knowledge about phones so I need you people to suggest something which will have the features of the Treo. Someone suggested the Blackberry 8800 - how is this ?
 
If you like the shape and GUI of the Blackberry, its excellent !

But I'm not too sure if the Blackberries bought there would be compatible with the Airtel/Hutch connections out here :)
