After having a lot of problems with Hathways broadband over the last 2 months .... 2 days back I went and got myself an internal D-Link DialUp modem for 450/-. I installed the modem and within minutes I was online via my MTNL phone line.

No papers to fill in - no advance money to be paid - no waiting for "experts from mtnl" to fix conx. It is very simple to use a DialUp modem on an existing MTNL phone line - all you need to do is setup a new Intenet conx in XP and set the user name as your MTNL Phone number from which you will go online and the password as mtnl and dial number 172231 ... thats it !! MTNL charges 10 paise per minute in the phone bill for Internet usage which is Rs 6 per hour. I find that the DialUp conx opens pages at about the same speed as my Hathway 256kbps conx. :O

I doubt I will be downloading anything on this conx - it will be used only for emergency browsing when Hathaway is down :)

lolz but the speed is not gud for 56 kbps

then u would not able u access the raipshare u need u disconnect and connect again :p

Sometimes the speeds from Hathway are so slow that it seems to be an upgrade :) Hathway has been quite bad since the last 2 months - In the evenings I could not even open threads in TE :(

@arunhalo ... MTNL dialup is good only for browsing - downloads are around 5KB/S :(

but sify and tata indicom are ok or somewhat

i have be use sify dial up without prepaid and postpaid ;) some free account :D

for 2 1/2 year ago now i switch 256 unlimited plans

try data one...ive been using it for the past 2-2.5 yrs and i always get 30-34KBps download speeds...:)...im on 256Kbps unlimited plan..:D

for 56 kbps hack upto 98 kbps like 128 kbps broadband :P
here simple trick how u hack
go start> run> type regedit

in registry

HKEY_local_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ Windows NT\ CurrentVersion\ Ports

Modify the default string value of the port. For example. COM1 is 9600,n,8,1" By default; you can modify it to "921600,n,8,1,p"

IN ALL com1 ,2,3,4,5

WARNING; Do this ONLY if using Dial-up (analogue) modems (e.g 56K, ISDN) Connected only to a serial Port (COMx), NOT IF modems! IF using internal Modems located in the communication Networking Riser (CNR) slot, do NOT use these settings! such cards are incompatible with these Settings.;)
Also, please don't expert you internet access speed to improve-if they do,well and good! :)

Same happening here... called their call centers and they say the problem is in Malad and Andheri!! In the evenings the speeds drops too much!!... But I havent upgraded to dialup yet, because I have full faith ;) in cable modem tech...and hopefully they'll beat ADSL (MTNL/Airtel) soon!! Get some more bandwidth Hathway for us guys!! :hap2:

@Eazy,
Why didn't you consider a cheap dataone connection? I think that would be cheaper with decent speeds. You could have considered any plan according to your needs. The lowest is 250 bucks from BSNL.

There is no BSNL service here - only MTNL
:(

Right now I was trying to get on line using the Hathway conx and it was impossible to open TE ... waited for 10 minutes and no luck in opening page... so plugged in the phone cable to the internal modem and in 5 seconds flat I am on line :) .... here is a screen capture of the speeds I got from my Dialup connection for the last 5 minutes...

I dont need to do anything for the dialup speeds - the web pages open really quick, I feel maybe even faster than my 256kbps BB conx. This is only for emergency use when my Hathway BB conx misbehaves. The reason for this thread is that I wanted to share with the people here how easy and cheap (only Rs 450/- for modem + Rs 6 per hour) it is to run a dialup conx with MTNL's phone line - and it is not bad at all for browsing.

You should get really MTNL TriBand AA Plan man, its excellent for backup connection, as you have to pay only for amount of MBs u use and it give you speeds upto 2Mbps. Although you have to pay 50Rs. as router rent, but if you have have your own router, you don't have to even pay that...

Tip: Sometimes routers/modems from other ISP work too, I have myself done the same, the Airtel modem can be made to work for MTNL, just look for ADSL2 support..

Now, whole of friends will know you are using Internet:P

6 rs per hr is only CLI net charge, who will pay call charges, Mr A raja himself i think:ohyeah:
