Linux From linux VM in windows to Windows VM in Linux

For more than a decade, I had been a big fan of Microsoft Software, especially Windows and Office (just a fan, not a fanboy). Once in a while, when a new distro Linux comes out, I used to try it for a day or two and forget about it. And if I had to use it for a long time, I used to do create a virtual machine for linux, which again never lasted more than few weeks.

But for the past month, there is a linux distro running on my home PC and there is no windows on the same. If I say the same to my friends at Digit Forum, they will surely be shocked.

The Awakening:

So, why suddenly I have started using Linux? For long, my work life has been depending a lot on Linux. I had been a Linux admin and then Clearcase admin. Few months ago, I got a feeling that I was not giving enough respect to the platform that has been the source of fodder for me. So, I thought of giving Linux a serious try at home.

The first real try:

The next day, I tried to use Fedora which is very identical to RHEL on which I work at home. But There were too many issues.

1) Not able to mount/display NTFS properly.

2) RPM dependencies that used to form a never ending chain

3) UI not refined.

4) Applications availability

5) Fonts look outdated especially in browser

I thought of waiting for better distro and was monitoring the progress of Ubuntu as it seemed to be the best Linux Distribution for home use.

Karmic Koala:

One day, I went to my friends place and there I saw Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) running on HP dv5 series laptop. I tried to use the OS for sometime and felt that this could the distro that I can finally use on my PC.

Good one. In fact, once "Lucid" is released I suggest you try Kubuntu 10.04 (or any distro with KDE 4.4) since thats another awesome looking desktop with fancy bling these days.

I'm also spending more time on Linux these days compared to Windows for work and at home, I think ever since (K)Ubuntu 8.10 came out.

I've always liked Windows since Win85 and I do like Win7 as the best version of Windows so far though :P

But I plan to install WinXP in a VM after seeing that other thread about syncing ipod via VM then I can (sort of) completely get rid of my dependence on the OS...

True da. once we get used to this UI, there is no turning back.
If u are compaing Gnome with Windows, Gnome lacks the sizzle but its highly usable. Check out KDE 4.3 or higher and you will really know what sizzling UI it has ;)

BTW all my machines are are gnome only as of now :P

I never really liked KDE but let me try it out on Fedora 12. and now, I don't want the linux distro to look like windows. Let it be unique :)

:O Btw which version of Fedora you are using, and stay away from it if you have a ATI graphics adapter. Just for once give Fedora 12 KDE a try.

Glad 9.10 worked for you. lot of people are mulling over non working Karmic.

that time I tried Fedora 9 and 10 I think. Tried to install Fedora 12 just now but the installer crashed. maybe faulty DVD (Linux For You mag's dvd). gonna try Slackware instead :)

GNOME is damn awesome.. After using it, Windows UI seems inadequate...

If you're using Fedora 12 and want hardware acceleration on your ATI graphics, just install mesa-experimental drivers... just issue to following command as root :-

yum install mesa-dri-drivers-experimental

I've been using Fedora 12 on my onboard ATI 3300 HD graphics since last 2-3 months.. never gave me any problem..

It seems that I really need to install Arch now.. I've 512 kbps unlimited connection... how much time will it take??

+1, my current top 3 favourites are (k)ubuntu, fedora and arch...
I would add Chakra (arch based) once final version is released, the tools make it worth for a newbie linux user also :hap2:
