I am seriously thinking about selling my 5800 and go in for a iphone 3G but i need it without a contract cause of my mobile phone bill. I pay about Rs 500 on an average as my mobile phone bill and i don't want to buy 30K phone and then increase my phone bill by almost double.

Also whats the price offered by Vodaphone for a iphone 3G 8GB. Can't i buy a iphone from Apple store in India for a little higher price.

AFAIK, you can buy the iPhone from Airtel without taking the default plan and use any pre/post paid plan of your liking

Not sure about Vodafone though

Dont want to change my 10 year old vodaphone number :P

But if i can take out the sim and use it in any other phone(The one which comes with airtel) then i can go for it.

AFAIK... you can buy iPhone without contract, not sure if both Vodafone and Airtel officially provide these. In Mumbai, I've seen many places selling official iPhones without contract. I mean, they ask you which you want, "Vodafone, Airtel ya Open?".

So I suppose you should get those in your area as well.

yeah and besides that, the unlock for 3g has now been released and works apparently although u might wanna ask scz if he tried it on his 3g yet

you can buy iphone 3g from vodafone and keep using your existing plan. but the problem is you have to select one of the special data plans which are totally crap. you can opt to not select a data plan, but i dont think it would be much fun if you have an iphone without gprs.

Quote from vodafone website:

Own the iPhone and get Rs 5000 off

You can now get Rs 500 credit on your monthly bills for the first 10 months if you buy the Apple iPhone 3G(8 GB) from 4th January onwards. So just drop in at a select Vodafone Store and get your iPhone today.

this is great imo. you can continue using your existing plan and you can take the iPhone Data Pack 499 plan which has 250mb free every month and 5p/10kb after that. this way you will have your existing plan and you have a data plan free for ten months. you can decide later what to do after 10 months. :D

iPhones were never available in India with contract. They are locked to whichever operator you buy it from, but there is no plan lock.

My suggestion: Buy it from vodafone, unlock it and use it with some other provider that offers cheaper Edge plans.

OR

You can use the free Edge service from vodafone for 10 months (till then your warranty will also be almost over, so you can unlock it without losing your peace of mind :P )
