While full HD screens and quad-core processors is becoming standard feature of high end smartphones, Windows Phone based smartphones only have up to 720p phones and dual-core processors till now. Microsoft will reportedly bring an update which will add full HD 1080p support by the end of this year.

The update which will be known as General Distribution Release (GDR3) for Windows Phone will allow full HD 1080p resolution display support and will be part of new flagship Windows Phone devices. It will also support new Qualcomm quad-core processors.

The HDR3 is not related to Windows Blue update which will arrive later. So, we should be able to see new flagship smartphones from HTC and Nokia by the end of the year featuring full HD displays.

Currently, the GDR2 update is in the pipeline which is expected to arrive on the rumored HTC Tiara in May.
