Real mainstream power inside

The surprising part of the Fusion all-integrated chip is that it actually comes with Redwood equivalent graphics. Redwood is a group codename for Radeon 5500 and 5600 graphics and its actually a mainstream core, rather than an entry level one.

Almost everyone had expected to see Cedar, an entry level Radeon 5000 core as a part of Fusion, as such cores would usually find their to chipsets in the past. However, it looks like ATI can simply squeeze a much bigger and more powerful graphics core in this all-integrated Fusion chip.

Compared to Sandy Bridge core, Redwood DirectX 11 derived core will kill Intel's all-integrated part in graphics performance, but it also looks like Intel will win the CPU fight, again. It also appears that the graphics inside Ontario and Llano only need DDR3 support, something that the Radeon 5500 generation offers, and the performance of the Fusion should be in range of 5500 series. This will depend on the clock and number of shaders enabled on the core, but it's clear that it will be quite powerful for the integrated market segment.

The Fusion APU line won’t be expensive either, but it seriously jeopardize the future of low-end, and entry level discrete graphics chips, as the CPUs of the future might have just enough graphics power.

We will still have to wait until 2011 before this technology is comercially available, but it already appears that it will be worth the wait.

^This is great news. Its a IGP user's dream come true :P Finally a IGP capable of decent gaming performance. If a 5-6k CPU has the graphics performance a ~4-4.5k worth GPU then nothing like it :)

Hopefully Fusion seems like its worth the wait after all :D

this would probably be equal to what the i810 intel chipset did back in the day ... bring a lot more power at a lot cheaper price point.

it'll also probably help kick of gpgpu computing, and we'll finally see some mainstream apps make use of our largely underutilized gpus.

^ Intel doesn't need to do anything. The ppl who buy computers with intel igps for the most part don't care about graphic performance. Intel gpus can offload video processing, and that's enough for most people.
AMD needs this because their cpu's just can't compete with Intel on raw performance. The only reason why people are buying them is because they represent good value.
I've got an AMD, and I'm happy with it, but it's not going to win any races with Intel in any performance, or efficiency contests.

Most PC's sold are not performance PC's but budget desktop & people do not buy these only for RAW performance... RAW performance is not everything... IGP is an important criteria for any budget PC & its a huge market for Intel to ignore... I think people do want better graphic performance, even though they do not know that its the GPU which matters for graphics... That's why most get Intel only to find out later that they can't run certain games 'coz IGP isn't good enough...

AMD has clearly made a dent in budget segment for Intel's market share with its 780G & with this lineup they will definitely capture more attention... Intel has to think of something even if they fail to beat AMD.. :P

Will AMD be introducing a new socket type for this or will it run on an AM3 motherboard...Anyone have an idea about this?

Ask your girlfriends, parents etc what kind of games they play on their computers....if they play any at all, they'll be mainly flash based ones.
Intel, for most people (non-techies), is the only cpu manufacturer they know...and hence the only name they'd ask the shopkeeper for.

I'm not saying a 5650 and an X2 is not a good thing, I'm just saying it's not going to make much of a difference to the vast majority of people out there, who're happy if their system can run AERO, HD movies, and play the occasional flash based game.

I think it'll be socket AM3r2.
But there's no word on if it'll be backwards compatible as yet.

You are sadly mistaken.. They are no longer the target demographic for PC's.. Believe it or not but its the kids (atleast in India) & their first criteria for any PC is.. can it run games...

I totally understand your POV about AMD but Intel cannot ignore this segment & you are only thinking about Indian perspective. In a global scenario powerful IGP does makes sense for a wide demographic... AMD has been ruling this market & Intel will do something even if they fail at it... :P

Sadly my folks don't know how to run a PC... :ashamed:
