Future Crytek titles will be multi-platform, no longer PC Exclusives

The PC Play magazine has released an English version of an interview it did with Cevat Yerli, president of the German Studio Crytek, which is well known for developing Crysis. In the interview they discuss the success and failures of Crysis, but more importantly the state of the PC gaming industry

Yerli was asked about the risk of going PC exclusive with a high-profile title, and replied with: “It is certainly. We are suffering currently from the huge piracy that is encompassing Crysis. We seem to lead the charts in piracy by a large margin, a chart leading that is not desirable. I believe that’s the core problem of PC Gaming, piracy. To the degree PC Gamers that pirate games inherently destroy the platform. Similar games on consoles sell factors of 4-5 more. It was a big lesson for us and I believe we wont have PC exclusives as we did with Crysis in future. We are going to support PC, but not exclusive anymore.â€

So, future releases from Crytek are likely to see Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions as well. Good news for console gamers, but not good news for the PC industry.

this is what he didn't say -

we want to make more money. console games make more money than pc games anyday. the next game will be developed on the x360 and then ported to the pc. the pc port will basically mean higher resolution textures and thats it. prepare to have 3 inch crosshairs, auto targeting, and a hud/interface/control system that is designed to use 4 buttons. but we can't actually say all this so we'll just blame piracy as the sole cause for us demoting the pc game to a lower priority, 2nd grade product. oh and yeah, all the noises we have been making about how well crysis is selling, it's record breaking 1 million sales and all were just pr bullshit. but hey, don't blame us, blame the pirates.

i read that far cry 2 is not by crytek. its by ubisoft using some new "dunia" (hindi/persian word for "world") engine. not sure what future games/engines coming from crytek.

i just wish more games were made with the current cry engine 2, otherwise games wont run well on my new desktop :)

Piracy is indeed shooing game studios away from the pc platform. Why would anyone spend millions making a game for the pc only to see 90% of users not paying for it. No one's gonna setup a business for charity...
With consoles you pay a fixed price for the hardware and everyone is guaranteed the same performance minus the display. Also it is difficult to pirate and modding the console voids warranty and you lose online playability.
If the record console sales in the US is anything to go by, the PC will slowly but surely die as a gaming platform.

you think maybe, just maybe, the fact that 99% of the computers on the planet can't play crysis at any level of acceptable performance might have had something to do with the so called poor sales?

oh no wait, it was all the pirates' fault.

My statement is not pertained to this game alone. It is a generalised statement which holds true for crysis to an extent as well.

People irrespective of hardware config resolve to piracy for games, movies, music. Instead of using a copy protection for a game on pc and wrecking havoc on the pc platform it is better to go the console route.

Even though I want the pc to survive as a gaming platform and I'm sure it will but I do not see it being the numero uno gaming platform in the long run.

sadly, it's already not the 'numero uno' anymore. sales figures show that consoles beat out pcs by miles. you also rarely see any pc exclusive good games.

the example of the system requirements of crysis was only to demonstrate that there are other factors apart from piracy that affect sales. the companies highlight piracy as their only reason for ditching the pc platform but it's such a lie.

Piracy is indeed a very important factor. Pirating Console titles is not as easy as pirating PC titles, So unlike PC titles which are usually priced very low, the game publishers will be free to set price they want on their titles. Simply, the publisher would have more control.

Thats why we see console titles are priced 3 to 8 times of a PC version, despite the PC version being superior in many cases.
