CPU/Mobo future of core i7 uncertain?

so here i am aboot to build a new core i7 920 system and i read an article on the new core i5 chip that apprently has a totally different socket!?!?!?! WTF???

does this mean that intel will NOT produce any more core i7 chips for the future?

as it stands now i'm getting the bottom of the line core i7 chip (the 920) and although its the most powerful / affordable chip on the market, it is still their bottom of the line core i7 chip meaning that i want to upgrade to a better one in 2 years or so. whewww, that was a long sentence :)

thoughts please ?????

Core i5 will have a different socket(LGA-1156). The succesor to Core i7 is currently codenamed Gulftown. It will carry forward Core i7's socket(LGA-1366).

In short Core i7(LGA 1366) is not going to be discontinued and it along with it's succesors will remain the most powerful architecture offering from Intel until Sandy Bridge.
 
core i5 and LGA1156 for low end and mid range builds. core i7 and lga1366 is targeted at high end PCs.

C2D and C2Q and LGA775 will be phased out after i5 comes out.

Liquidmonkey's language is certainly not appropriate and he must edit his post. Having said that, Vandal's reply was unwarranted. The OP had a slightly complicated question and wasn't a candidate for a simple google search.
 
my comments are edited but i hope the mods have given MAGNET a warning as well for telling me i have been raped. that IS HIGHLY OFFENSIVE!!!!!!! and then he has the gall to tell me my avatar is vulgar.

y aren't u mods doing anything about that?

and to further point out, neither MAGNETS nor VANDALS comments have been warranted one bit. i was polite from the beginning and even said thanks to everyone who helped out.

MAGNET and VANDAL seem like trolls in my opinion as they have not helped out one bit, so, why did they even post. but then maybe they are 12 years old, who knows.

like i said earlier, if your not going to help out, don't post anything as your abusing the forum!!

No disrespect, but you are reacting like how a typical uneducated guy would act. Why cant you be open to other people's opinions? If you cant be, dont post! Posts can be either positive or negative- but he didn't say anything personal that you will act like this, did he? Is there something wrong what Vandal has said? Googling saves time. Besides you made a premature conclusion that i5 will be a different socket, so LGA1366 is going to be chucked out. If you were genuinely curious, one would have researched further as it is faster. Ofcourse if there was no information given, that's a different issue.

listen man, i did google before i posted, i ALWAYS DO.
and telling someone to google is like telling people they have to breath or they need to put one foot in front of other to walk.

forums are not only for getting facts from the experts but also their own opinions and in that sense, its hard to find that on google.
 
Although your logic about Googling and Forum Information is correct... your language and tone was not logical at all, and that's what was wrong.

No one on any forums would like.
 
Reportedly ,there will be no 'quad core' successors to i7. Gulftown (i9 ?) is hexa core and very much server/HPC stuff (like the whole of Nehalem actually)

X58 and LGA 1366 WILL remain the high-end chipset /socket till Sandy Bridge in 2011, but I feel Intel will have a new socket with SB (who doesnt want to milk the cash cow anyway, thats 2 years away :yawn , and depends more on the market situation THEN )
 
well i guess if they have more cores than 4 and STILL fit on the same socket, its all good :) but then again, how probable is that since we know business's LOVE to milk every last drop out of the consumer :(

will have to wait and see i suppose...
