Galaxy S : Initial Impressions

my friend got this phone (Galaxy S) and here are my initial impressions:

1) The display is truly stunning. my Legend looked like an el-cheapo ass before GS. From normal text to movie playback, thd display is worth a thousand tech salutes! Its the greatest thing in this phone. Nothing can come close.

2) touchwiz 3.0 still has long way to catch up with SenseUI. It still is confusing like hell, not many good widgets.

3) the build quality is damn good. It's totally lightweight and thin. easily pocketable and one handed operation is very easy to do

4) Samsung Kies sucks. my friend came to my place. Phone is not connecting to windows 7 or ubuntu in mass storage mode. It just doesn' have this option. Will report back on this in two days.

5) Touch sensitivity is really high and finally, I think there is a phone whose touch response matches that of iphone.

6) music quality is similar to what I get on Legend. Though not as refined and clean as that on ipod touch, it's decent (I didn't like mids and highs that much)

7) bundled earphones are great (as per my friend). comes with in-ear headphones

8) it's damn fast. But when I started copying 280 files form SD card to phone storage, the phone came down to a crawl. everything became super slow.

9) you cannot do anything when the phone is connected to PC for data copy or sync. Unlike Legend, you have to leave the phone alone. And when you connect the phone to PC when some app is open, the phone rejects to sync. Damn you Samsung

Finally, I am left with mixed emotions on this one :) I just couldn't say "oh my god. this phone is so perfect" like I said when I started using Legend or maybe I am too used to SenseUI that I am not able to come out of it.

A lot of research needs to be done on the phone still. Will give a more and clear update by this weekend.

@desiibond: Is there any lag while opening/closing apps? some people are saying UI is jerky sometimes even when it should not be, given the kind of hardware it has under the hood

I didn't find any lag in the UI. But when I changed to coverflow in music app, there was some serious amount of lag. The player's coverflow is not at all optimized and it doesn't look good too. Otherwise, the phone is damn fast.

PS: haven't tested the camera yet as it was the least priority for my friend and me too never really care about mobile phone's camera.

OT: Which is the next most anticipated phone before end of this year ( android only)??
Maybe HTC Vision (with full qwerty) and Droid 2 (milestone's successor).

But the real focus shifts from Android phones to windows phone 7 phones and Android tablets in the next few months. We may not see big launches like N1, Desire, GS in next 3-4 months. But who knows :)

I wouldn't agree with desiibond on regards to the built quality of galaxy s .

I wish the back cover was a metal one like on the samsung wave . When u remove the back cover that is when u feel how cheap the back cover of galaxy s is

There is some lag , definitely present in the music player (mostly when a number of apps are open).

HTC sense is miles ahead of samsung touchwiz.

All in all its a kick ass phone , with the recently announced update for the phone (on twitter) , it seems that phone is gonna be even more snappier

speaking about back cover, are you going to play football with it all the time? :)

There are hundreds of phones with thin back cover. It is thin but when attached to the phone, it's intact and is good.

The slight lag that you are observing must be due to Eclair (IMO). Froyo should be better in making use of multitasking.

Anyway thats just an owner's opinion

Definitely the owners of galaxy s are not going to play football with it but it feels cheap for a premium phone , if it was for a nokia 1100 , i would be happy but not for this .

The lag is due to in-efficient partitioning of the internal memory by Samsung. This will be fixed soon :)

Spica is almost 6 months younger than tattoo. That's huge when u consider that android hasn't been around for that's long. So obviously Spica is better. But honestly Spica feels more solid in hand that Galaxy S. Its ironic, but it really does feel kinda weird in hand with non rubberized or brushed finish back like Spica. I mean, this 29k top of the line device definitely deserved something better.

Nexus one and desire are in different class in terms of built quality and feel of the phone in hand.

Samsung is not catching too much flack for this as they are saved by brilliant screen and brilliant hardware.

Shripad, that post by me was directed towards wr8_utd to show that it's the model that matters not the brand! (of course, with few exceptions) :)
