Game Console for a newbie

I've always been fascinated by games, started out playing Prince, Wolfenstein 3D in the early 90s, but then work and other things in life took priority and I never ever get involved beyond simple games on the PC. But, now I've got a little more time on my hands and want to take some steps into the world of gaming.

I'm debating on whether to go the PC route or a game console. At this time, the game console seems to be the logical choice, it'll be easier to convince the wife rather than spend a huge amount of money on getting my pc up to the latest specs so that it can play the good games.

I'm thinking of going for the PS2 first, and later on moving to the PS3 or XBOX 360. The PS2 has seen a drop in price recently, it's around 8k at the Sony dealer. Does it make sense to go for the PS2 through the official route or should I look at other options. On ebay, it still lists around 7.5K, so I'm thinking the extra note is well worth for the warranty and peace of mind. Are there any advantages of buying from the grey market?

Also, what are the games that one can start with? I'm not looking at very violent games to start with, more stuff that will appeal to a male/female audience. Any suggestions for games that a kid of 4 years can enjoy?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

A kid of 4 years? I think that young a kid will LOVE Nintendo games, most of them are very family oriented.

You can always give point and click adventure games a try if you're not into some of the more violent games of today. Many such games are available on PC, and their requirements aren't too steep, so yeah, they're worth a look.

If you get a PS2, try to get Guitar Hero 2, I hear that that's a game that the whole family can enjoy. Plus, there is a ton of other games out for the system, new games are still coming out for it unlike the Xbox and NGC. So yeah, like a friend of mine at another forum said, PS2 is STILL the best value for money option out there.

Happy gaming! :)

PS2 has everything you'll need to get back to gaming and more and plenty enough for a 4 year old.

What genre's you're looking to playing? We'll be able to help you get back to gaming within no time then.

For starters, try Final Fantasy X. If your wife is going to be playing it with you, its going to make her cry (Get X-2 if interested in the sequel). Then Indigo Prophecy is one good title that is a game but plays a lot like a movie, a very different take on the adventure genre with a dark themed triller storyline, then there's Okami, ICO, Shadow Of The Collosus.... again, these are games your wife or friends would love to play with you. There's plenty more, but they go into genres like horror, survival horror, action (good themed games like Max Payne and bad themed games like Grand Theft etc), beat em ups, fighters, RPG etc. You can also use sites like gamespot.com, ign.com for a review on what games to get in what genres.

For the 4yr old, get him any cartoon movie based games (like Spongebob, The Incredibles, Spiderman The Movie games, etc), Ratchet and Clank, Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, Sphinx and the cursed mummy, and games from platformers genre, all the kids and adults alike love 'em.

Thanks for your prompt reply. I'm kind of open to genres, as I said, a while ago, I was playing the fps games like Wolfenstein (those were the days, we would play well into the night on the sole 486 in our office, 'cos that was the only one with a colour monitor:). When I get the PS2, I'll probably get some shooters as well as some of the other games you mentioned.

Any idea about a good place to get games in Bangalore? (I'm looking for original games, not pirated ones.)

Plenty of places to get original from, if you are comfortable online (which you should be). Ebay.in and ebay.com (USA one, first time you go there you'll be redirected to ebay.in which is an option you can cancel) are great places to find some good deals and rare games.
