Both Universal and Fox Studios have pulled out of the Halo movie adaptation, citing rising movie costs and concern over the inexperience of first time director Neil Blomkamp. As the budget was rumored to be edging closer to $200 million, and Microsoft getting a lion's share of the profits, the studio execs decided it was time to pull the plug.

It's hard to argue with the logic on this one, based on the director alone. While Peter Jackson is executive producing, Neil Blomkamp doesn't have one feature film to his name, having only been a 3D animator on TV shows like Smallville and Stargate, and directed a Halo-ish short film entitled Alive in Joburg. If Jackson himself took the reins, it would probably be a no brainer, but you can easily understand Universal and Fox not wanting to roll a pair of $200 million dollar dice on someone their first time out of the gate.

Microsoft hasn't made things much easier, demanding an upfront fee of five million for the rights and 10% of the profits -- especially when movies based on video games have never been huge performers at the box office. This isn't to say the movie still couldn't get made. Jackson is still attached and pre-production continues on the film, although without a studio home it now faces a serious uphill battle.

According to Jackson's agent at International Creative Management, Ken Kamins, "What happened was this: Universal, on behalf of both studios, asked for a meeting with the filmmakers just prior to the due date of a significant payment. Basically, they said that in order to move forward with the film, the filmmakers had to significantly reduce their deals. They waited until the last minute to have this conversation. Peter and Fran, after speaking with their producing partners and with Microsoft and Bungee (the studio that designed the original game), respectfully declined."

Come on Variety, you can't even spell Bungie right?

What do you think? Should Master Chief drive his warthog out of Hollywood, or come back with both barrels blasting?

Now if only this would happen to all movies based on games.

Let me rephrase it for you ;) "Now if only this would happen to all movies based on games made by a certain Mr. Uwe Boll."

Well, to be fair, Uwe have been known to make good movies or at least so I've heard. In any case, my inital point still stands.

I hope he doesn't spoil the Far Cry franchise :@

Halo fans should be happy the movie has been pulled off. I know I would've been a much prouder Resident Evil fan if it weren't for the movies, they make us look bad :P, and they are nothing like the games, not even the storyline, ever!

Edit : Uwe Boll is directing FarCry?

xD. Its a flop before it even hits the screen, write it down!! The movie may be good, but Boll's reputation is an automatic FAIL for any movie project he's going to be doing. And Far Cry's fanbase isn't that strong either, unless they come up with a new game on next-gen console or something, they're better off with a Half Life movie.

If the halo movie was made, there's a very high probability tht it wouldn't be a flop since there's peter jackson as the producer and his studio of special effects doing the job where as for the new director Neil Blomkamp, ppl had doubts about him but after seeing his 10 min CG-movie..they were confident tht he wouldn't disappoint.

Baah, I have no idea where I heard that from. Anyway, research has proven me horribly wrong. I'll just stick back with gaming where I belong.

Peter Jackson was going to produce it?! There goes the only VG based movie that actually could've done really, really great. I guess this is an upset then for Halo fans :P

Well the biggest problem with RE movies were that the storyline was nothing at all like the games. But at the Box office, both the RE movies were a hit, giving rise to a third movie quarter way through production and set for release in mid-end 2k7 (Resident Evil : Extinction), and then the fourth movie which is confirmed already, and should release one year after that.

ROFLMAO!!!

I think my stomach is gonna burst from all tht laughing...LMFAO!!!

Pls by all means rent one of Uwe Boll's movies, watch it and give us a review :P .Can't be worse than watching a movie directed by techboy or could it

Anyways, I'll wait for the Transformers movie and also the metal gear solid movie which has already started,Hoping this would be good since it was Hideo who picked the team to make the movie.
