Hello Everyone,

My Cousin's 5year old Dell XPS 15 is giving up. so he needs a new gaming laptop. requirements are:

-- Should play the recent games. currently he likes to play Fifa,NFS types of games aka which Dedicated gfx card should we go for?

-- Should NOT overheat, it was huge problem with Dell XPS 15:@

-- It should be heavy duty laptop, which can run for long hours(12hrs+) without sweat.

-- Should last atleast 3years. earlier dell had its battery gone in 2nd year, optical drive in 3rd & speakers in 4th year. so would like something more reliable this time.

Budget: 50k appox

Thanks in advance

Pretty good choice, generally HP laptops are very sturdy and being i7 2nd Gen with 2GB DDR5 graphics I think it will be able to handle all the present games decently.

An Alternative

I myself using HP Compaq since last 3.5-4 years and had no complaint apart from the DVD writer which I replaced twice as I had extended my warranty to 3 years. Their Customer service center is also good -> prompt and polite. Just speaking about my personal experience as a end-user

Stay away from HP DV6,it heats up way more than xps15,and the screen is really bad,so is the touchpad.

There are many dv6 models and not all of them must be heating, you can search internet for DV6-6165TX heating problems

The current gen. XPS 15 has very good reviews. It has a SB processor and a 40nm mid range GPU with a fairly big chassis. So overheating shouldnt be an issue. My vote would go for the XPS15. Wait for the XPS15 owners to comment on the 12+ hours of runtime w/o heating though.

If you are OK with using a laptop cooler(even a cheap one like CM Notepal X-lite costing ~600/- will be fine), the HP will run fine for a long time. But it heats up a bit after sometime if you game on it without using a cooler.

I own one myself and have used it for many hours with that cooler. But remember, using it for such long periods of time will shorten the life of components like motherboard, so it is better to buy an extended 3 year warranty (HP total care pack) if you decide to go with it.

You can also look at Acer 5830 or Sony Vaio CB35
just suggestions
they seem to have decent hardware and fall in your price range
there are people recommending them in some other threads
The Acer will come with an Nvidia 540M whereas the CB35 will come with AMD Raedon 6630
both decent graphic cards with good performance

Experiences with XPS 15 L502X after 7 months :

- runs 10-16 hours daily, no problems

- the fan is high rpm, works perfectly - it gets very noisy under load but the chassis remains fairly cool

- optimus works perfectly in windows (no official solution in linux - using HD3000 there except for CUDA)

- speakers are a bliss (by laptop standards, and even otherwise they are decent), esp. the subwoofer

- have played Witcher 2, DeusEx HR, Crysis 2 (run comfortably ~25-30 fps with med. settings+HRT) , Civ 5,TF2,Borderlands (run comfortably 60fps HIGH) on my GT525M

- keyboard is slightly flimsy, but one gets used to it after a while

- screen is like any average laptop screen, i wish i had spent 6.5k and gotten the 1080p upgrade

- touchpad has good texture + separate buttons

-adapter cord is a bit loose, gets removed easily

My suggestion would be to give XPS15 w/ an i7 Quad and GT525M preference rather than i5 Dual and GT540M regardless of your workload.

Oh and HP dv6 has a more powerful GPU , same CPU (i7 Quad), for same or lower price. But I have seen HP dv6-3k series (almost the same chassis) heat up like crazy with a dedicated GPU and a dual core, so I would thoroughly check the fan/cooling before getting a quadcore.
