Gaming Purchase Dilemma

I have some extra cash inflow this month.

1. I am getting a refund of 5k from Sony India as they have given me a 40GB PS3 as replacement for my 60GB PS3 which got the SOD problem.

2. I have got a 10k bonus from our company for being Employee of the Quarter :P.

I was told that if I want the bonus amount in cash, they would cut out the taxes and give 7k odd, and alternatively if I get some product with a authorized purchase in India, I will get the full 10k reimursed without any tax cuts. Additionally, I will get some year end bonus this month

So I have decided to get something in that amount. I initially thought that I would get a GPU upgrade, but I had decided a long time back that I would get a new GPU from the US and also the GPU scene is in an unstable state right now and I want to wait out a bit.

The other alternative is to get another console either an XBOX 360 or PSP. Now I am confused about what to get in the end....:S

I want to get a XBOX 360, but I have no idea how good the after sales support in India is. I do not want to get a similar experience that I had with Sony India and especially so since the XBOX 360 really needs after sales support.

So what do you guy's think...

well if you have a ps3, you dont need a xbox 360. buy a psp with custom firmware, 4gb mem card, hori screen protector. believe me its worth each penny.

What about the Nintendo Wii ?

I saw it @ Heera Panna for 18k.....a 3k stretch on budget.

No idea about mohali prices ....but you can tell some1 from mumbai to ship it for you ...

id definitely say the Wii, even if u say u dont have enough space for it :P

It does not require a lot of space to play and its awesome fun, if not for that then get the PSP, if not that wait it out coz there is suppose to be some price drops on 360 in April.

Guy's Wii from grey market is not an option for multiple reasons, The main one being that I have to get the item with proper bill (with taxes and all) in India and submit the same at office. Also I have to get the item before the end of this month, otherwise the bonus would be deposited directely into my account with the tax deducted. The company wants to clear these within this financial year itself.

So, the PSP or XBOX 360 seems to be the more likely option.

what is the SOD Problem?

Like the XBOX 360 has RRoD, the PS3 has SOD. It stands for Spin of Death. The initial iterations of the PS3 (60GB and 20GB) models had Blue Ray drives whose diode reliability was low. When you play some games which stresses the Blue Ray drive like COD4, Heavenly Sword etc, there is a high chance that these Blue Ray drives will fail. Once this happens the PS3 wont be able to read any disc though the rest of the funcitonality works fine. This problem has been given the name Spin of Death.

If it's only boiled down to PSP or Xbox 360 then go with the Xbox 360.But this would again turn out to be a costly affair later on if you oughta get original games for it.Why isn't 8800GT on your mind? Planning for something bigger for your graphic card eh Lord? ;)

xbox 360 over PSP anyday. ask yourself how much you will actually be gaming on the move and for all its other uses, there are better alternatives and you might even be owning some of them. i bought a PSP recently as the price was cheap in dubai. i had actually bought it for my cousin but i liked it so much initially that i decided to keep it for myself and get him something later on. however, after a week of using it, i didn't see myself using it as much as i thought i would so i gave it to him.

you can get a Wii from JJ Mehta.. am sure that you'll get a bill and all for the same.
Nintendo Wii Game Console

Nintendo Wii is not officially available in India, so even if the dealer gives a bill, it would still be considered an illegal import.

I usually get legit games even for PC and PS3 games are costlier than XBOX 360, so getting legit games is not such a big issue for me.

As for the GPU, 8800GT was never in my plans. I have plans to go for a Multi GPU setup, either SLI or Crossfire, my GPU upgrades are usually 1.5~2 year cycles and I have plans to move on to a 24" display before the end of this year. So I want something which will last me 2 years once I purchase and I have set my standard benchmark as Crysis. Any setup which can handle Crysis effortlessly is what I will look for. Thats why I had been postponing my GPU upgrade for an year now.

yeah, thats what I have been considering. PSP is fine as a traveling companion for watching movies and playing games, but I will probably not touch it at home when I have access to high resolution gaming and the thing is I do not travel much either (Only to Hyderabad and Back once or twice a year). So I am sort of inclined towards the XBOX 360, but I am also a bit reluctant because of the poor after sales experience I had with Sony. Can anyone share their experiences on MS after sales for XBOX 360 in India?

MS support for the 360 has been pretty good for everyone who ive came across needing an RMA for their consoles, so given your choices, id pick up an xbox 360

Yeah, seems like MS has slightly better after sales support compared to Sony. I got the same response from the local Planet M guy. Anyways got a quick check of the prices.

XBOX 360 Core - 15k
XBOX 360 Pro - 24k
XBOX 360 Halo 3 Special Edition - 27.5k
XBOX 360 Elite - 30k

I can eliminate the core model since it does not include a HDD. The Pro model has a good price tag, but its still old stock sans the HDMI and the newer motherboard design. The Halo 3 Special Edition was the one I was going to get before deciding to go for the PS3. It has HDMI and the newer Mobo design, but the Elite looks more tempting since for 2.5k more I get 100GB more disk space and cables/adapter required to connect my Monitor and speakers.

So basically its a stand-off between the XBOX 360 Pro and the XBOX 360 Elite.

if u can invest the extra money then go for the elite since its the best xbx 360 console out there... and if u want to buy the pro donate the extra cash to charity ur call :P :P

Do you have a lot of time to play on a handheld? If you are going to play only at home the question is moot. I love my PSP but thats only because I travel more than two hours to and fro daily. If I am at home the PSP doesnt even get a lookin.

So ultimately if you have a lot of fee time sitting idle in a car go for the PSP or else get the 360. There are enough exclusive titles on the 360 to justify a purchase even if you have a PS3. Plus some pretty decent exclusives coming this year.

Are you sure you want to go for the Elite? You're paying extra for the built in HD-DVD drive which is of little use now and will be of even lesser use later on. Just get the Premium or Pro.

Huh..:S XBOX 360 Elite does not bundle a HD DVD drive.

The main reason I wanted to go for XBOX 360 Halo 3 Special Edition or Elite is because both have an HDMI port and they are relatively newer revisions with updated motherboard design making them a bit more resilient to RRoD (though they do not fix the problem).

The Pro consoles selling in india seem to be all really old stock or rejected stock from other PAL regions (after MS updated the Pro version with HDMI and new motherboard design). The Halo 3 Special Edition has almost the same bundle as the Pro and the Elite in contrast has 120GB HDD and bundles HDMI cables/adapters required to use the HDMI port and just 2.5k costlier than Halo 3 Special Edition.
