Graphic Cards Geforce 8600GT does not downclock?

Gliep

Beginner
I rarely play video games on my PC, but it so happens that I have a 8600GT and it gets rather hot!

The tool GPU-Z always shows me the same clocks: 540 / 702 / 1188 Mhz (Core / Memory / Shader), which is the maximum for this card, in 3D mode. Shouldn't this chip clock down and lower the voltage when it's not in use?

I have the latest Nvidia drivers. Even after boot it shows the same frequencies. Anything I can check? I want a cool, quiet and economical system.

Could be driver issue ?

Try downloading 175.19 or you could just try reinstalling the newest driver by following method

Download driver sweeper .

How to use ?

This method will delete remaining files upon reboot . You can clean your drivers this way:

*. Use the official uninstaller(s) of the driver(s) you want to uninstall.

*. Reboot your PC in Safe Mode.

*. Run Driver Sweeper and select what to clean.(in your case nvidia drivers)

*. Analyse lists all the entries possible to remove, cleaning removes the entries selected.(select all in your case) .

I see, thanks, but how did you know that the 8000 series do not downclock/volt? Do you have a reference???? It's a pity such a waste of electricity...

Found it!

I still don't understand why Nvidia made the choice to leave out this feature though. At half the clock speed this card is fast enough to run things like Aero on Windows. Then again, I think they were just too lazy to put it in or maybe it was difficult from a driver viewpoint; I have always found the Nvidia drivers really bad.

Now then, I guess I should try third party tools like Rivatuner or the one you mentioned, MSI afterburner. Isn't that one for MSI cards only though?

Thanks again.

I tried MSI Afterburner. I couldn't find anything about a 2D/3D mode. Also, voltage control was locked. So unfortunately it is useless.

More ideas are welcome, but I think I'll just have to stick with a hot power guzzling card right now. Oh well, it's still winter.
