More details have popped up and we learned that GeForce 8800 GT (G92) will be clocked at 600MHz core and 1.8GHz memory. However Nvidia might still further increase the core clock depending on how Radeon 2950PRO performs. The reference score provided by Nvidia to the partners is 10.8K in 3DMark06 or to be exact 10769. The launch date is said to be brought forward to October 29th. Mobile101 has a photo of the 8800 GT card even and it is a single slot solution as we have been telling you.

It seems that Nvidia is planning another GeForce 8800 GTS SKU with more stream processors. This is to widen the performance gap between the upcoming 8800 GT and 8800 GTS as 8800 GT is coming too close and it might hurt the sales of 8800 GTS. As such, the number of stream processors is increased from 96 to 112 while the rest of the specs like 500/800 core/mem clock, 320-bit memory interface, 640MB GDDR3 memories remain unchanged. There is also an interesting side note that NVIDIA will NOT be doing any formal launch activities, press announcements, website updates, or any other marketing around this new sku. Partners can conduct their own marketing activities around the sku as they see fit.

wow :O

looks cool :ohyeah:

but i'm just thinking when will a 8800 Ultra successor release :S

$200 for 256MB and $249 for 512 MB

supports SM 4.0 , PCI-Express 2.0 and Directx 10.1

Frankly speaking.... this makes the decision harder... SM4.0, DX10.1, 200$ all sounds very tempting. Now this or 2600XT softmodded.. damn its tough!

Ask yourself 2 questions

1. Do you work on Maya/Max/CAD at home?

2. Do you game more at home?

If you do both then get 2900Pro(if moddable) or 2900XT(bite the bullet) :P

i say wait .......cause the AMD camp seems to have got their act together this time ...........the 8800GT challenger .....the RV670 seems to be a good card and will be competitively priced ...it also offers more features like UVD .....besides better HD decoding .....i guess it has HD audio decoding too like the 29xx ....its gonna be called the 2950...........and it seems ati might just win it this time round in terms of price/performance .......

had to create two posts.........

as the first post suggested .............there may be a newer 8800GTS with more stream processors .......so as to create some space between the 8800GT and 8800GTS

but my main crib is ..........we want hardware that will shred the DX10 games ...........currently $500 are just managing to stay afloat ....whereas the $350-$400 cards are showing signs of needing an upgrade to handle DX10 games

1) No, I don't use Maya at all. But I do use 3D studio Max to some extent if not heavily.

2) My gaming is almost equivalent to my Max usage. To some extent, if not heavily.

So I guess, 2900Pro sounds like a good choice... but the damn thing sucks a whole lot power, even compared to two 2600XTs in crossfire. I think ashishek has point there, we should see how 2950 turns out. If it's good, then it's good :).

Besides, after using various nVidia cards for past 6 years... I think I'd give ATi a try.

Yah I meant Maya/Max...Edited my post just before u replied, but too late I guess :P

The 8xxx sucks in Maya(not sure abt Max) unfortunately...No, not talking of

speed which isnt upto ATI levels, but corruptions...

Here are some pointers I think I'd like consider.

8800 GPU

pros

Better Gaming Card, more power than 2600.

nVidia Gelato Renderer for Max

cons

Current solutions are DualSlot (not a major issue though)

Still pretty expensive in India

Bad performance in CAD (no definitive word on Max yet)

2x00 GPU

pros

Good CAD performance

Decent gaming performance (on 2600) without AA/AF

Advantage of softmodding to get more CAD juice

Price

cons

High power requirements on 2900

average gaming performance on 2600 (crossfire might be good, anyone knows 2600 crossfire review?)

you are comparing a 8800 gpu to a 2600. it makes no sense. 2600 should be compared to the 8600 series.

also isnt nvidia gelato only for quadro cards? or was i mistaken about it for so long?

The reason I'm comparing those two is because those two are options I have in mind for purchasing.

If It saves money for moderate performance drop, I would prefer to go for 2600XT and softmod it. My only concern is, if at all 2600XT softmodded works in crossfire or not? If it does, it gives me enough power for gaming as well as Max and still costs me lesser than 8800GTS 320mb. The only thing keeping me from 2900 is power draw, that thing is huge sucker.

Since the knowledge of 2600XT to FireGL softmod, I've stalled my purchase of graphic card. I would like settle for something that balances both the needs (Gaming and 3D MAX) well. For some reason, both 8800GTS and 2600XT are dancing in my head teasing me. :(

And... Gelato is not exclusive for Quadro. I'm using it currently on my age old 6600GT. Check the system req here : NVIDIA Gelato Pro - System Requirements

It doesn't run on any other 8 series GPU except 8800. That's why I'm not comparing 8600 in my pointers.

Also I just noticed that Gelato Pro only runs on Quadro. Non-Pro version can be used on non-quadro card listed on above link.

so should i go for 8800gts 640mb or this one cuz my relation is coming from us so i can ask them to pick it up and will it be compatible with my 650i ultra
please clarify my doubts and one more thing if i get this card will i be able to
play the next gen games at high settings thx in advance
