Hi everyone.
I have extensively searched the Internet and past techenclave posts for this, but I was wondering if anyone can solve this problem. It seems to be common, judging from my research, but none of the solutions have helped so far.

I am receiving both the Generic Host Processes and svchost.exe messages:

"Generic Host Process for Win32 services has encountered a problem and needs to close."

"svchost.exe Application Error - The instruction at 0x745f2780 referenced memory at 0x00000000. The memory could not be "read". Click ok to terminate, cancel to debug."

I have a six-month-old Dell Inspiron E1500 with Windows XP Professional. I just downloaded Office 2007 and before these messages started, I kept getting a Windows Automatic Update for Excel 2003 (which I no longer had) that kept ending in error. It repeatedly tried to update itself every time I logged on. I'm not sure if these two events are correlated.

Upon reading some past posts, I ran the Trend Micro HijackThis and the results are below:

Is this a virus? I have a Dell printer, so the HP printer thing shouldn't be an issue at all.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I can't run the Internet or anything on this computer.

I have SpySweeper and Ad-Aware, and Norton AntiVirus. They should be all updated.

Thank you!

1. Unplug your USB Devices
2. Goto Safe Mode Run Ad Aware full system scan and the Spybot S&D full system scan
3. Restart in normal mode.
4. Goto Start -> Run -> Msconfig -> Uncheck "Load Startup Items"
5. Goto the Services tab in Msconfig, click on "Hide all Microsoft Services" and then uncheck everything.
6. Restart PC...At this point none of your AV etc. are on...so don't connect to the internet.
7. Note if the error comes up or not, check items in msconfig and restart
8. Post here if the error still comes up.

I did all of the above. The Ad-Aware and S&D scans both came up clean, but I am still receiving both messages upon startup.

isn't ur system clogged a bit more with host processes & services. remove the toolbars etc. remove all ur adware/antivirus also. Dell services are also aint any good, so remove them all.

And is that supposed to help with the prompts and the problems?

Some Q's First:

When you try to start your PC in safe mode do you still get the same error message('s)?

You get this error msg every time after Comp Restart correct?

Im assumin the error has something to do with Windows Update.

Please try these and let me know what happens :-

When you do get the messages DONT CLICK ANYTHING on the dialog box, Dont click ok/cancel/wateva; Leave it running.

Go into windows update and change it to manuall, it should be at automatic.
I think you know how to navigate to Windows Update...

Restart PC

Hmmm...i remember once when i had a similar issue...but you wouldnt want to know how many of em ive been thru !!

Regards,
n00b

P.S : Can you post your event viewer's Log...

Im not sure he meant that... but definitely donot remove your AntiVirus :S :S

And please post if you got the startup message in Safe mode or not.

Yes i specifically meant REMOVING the Antivirus, its because i have seen many a times the malware locks/corrupts AVs & thus leading to crasching of scan services that run in the background.

But that statement also implied Re-installing ur AV once ur problem is solved, never knew some retards need specifications in quoted words.

i had the same problems few days ago..

heres what i did

After you see the win32 error... click on the details error report..in wich u should see the folder wich is causing the problem(mine was in my doc user local something) .. go to tht folder and scan it thoroughly i used avast and it caught 2trojans there... duunt remember the name of the trojans.... just let it catch the trojan and delete them immediately (the trojans were not detected when i tried to scan my entire windows directory. so u need the exact folder name...

this should probably solve your problem....was facing the same thing my net used to stop working after i got the error.. Now everythings working perfectly

I did this and it says that the error is located in C:\Docume~1\Courtney\Locals~1\Temp\WER1a80.dir00. The two files are svchost.exe.mdmp and appcompat.txt.

I have scanned the contents inside this folder (there are two other files besides the aforementioned ones) with Spy Sweeper S&D, AdAware SE and AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5. None have found anything.

I am restarting my computer in safe mode and scanning with Norton (it won't load in normal mode) to see if the error messages still come up and to see if Norton detects anything.

I do not get either message in Safe Mode.

I do get these messages every time I restart my computer while not in Safe Mode.

I changed Windows Update to manual - and I'm sorry, but I'm not quite sure what my event viewer's log is?

Dude thts the exact file names and folders where i found the 2 trojans and avast found them really quick...

try and install avast and scan the folder....

As soon as I installed Avast, it found 3 infected files, all in SpySweeperUI.exe. - which is my spyware program. Is this normal? I deleted the files, and Avast is doing both a virus scan and the on-demand scan.

The infected file names found on Avast didn't have anything to do with the appcompat.txt and svchost.exe.mdmp, as far as I know. Should I just delete these files from the Temp folder, or is the problem fixed by deleting the SpySweeperUI trojans?

I scanned the WER1a80.dir00 file on Avast that includes these two files, and it came up clean. Is this what yours did? I don't understand how these two files can be the source of the Win32 error but they aren't coming up as infected, while other files are.

naah.. for me as soon as i scanned my entire local folder... avast caught 2 trojans immediately wich were in the 2 files tht uve mentioned... after deleting them(via avast) ive nt got the error since.. u can try deleting the 2 files totally

nt sure wht use they are for anyways...

I did what you said and I removed the three trojans. I restarted my computer and have yet to see the two error messages.
