Really, which hellhole we are in with respect to internet speeds and FUP. I live in state capital (Bhubaneswar) and the only provider in my area is BSNL with a 8GB cap (upto 1 mbps) and then 512 kbps. Damn , half of the days i have to wait for 360p youtube streaming also.

I also download around 50 gb monthly. However, the thing is why India is far behind in adopting super speed internet as a standard. This is now 2013 and without high speed connection , we will all die.

Heh! I live in the NATIONAL CAPITAL and MTNL does NOT give connection to us.

Consumers are being taken to a Ride. Believe me i have seen few towns where internet connection costs 1000 for 256kbps unlimited connection
and some places where it is 256kbps up to 10gb for 400 Bucks. Because 256kbps is Goddamn Broadband according to GOVT of India.

I believe a court in country X can be shown a decision taken by country Y's court as a precedent to reach the same conclusion?
So somebody files something like a PIL against this FUP non sense, people in India might have a bright chance to get the verdict delivered in their favor?

Wow. You guys are worried about internet speed when we don't even have electricity and clean drinking water everywhere. There are a lot many important things that you and I are taking for granted when we take part in such rants.
There's no denying that there are much more serious problems in India, but this sounds like an excuse that the government would give. It's a lame excuse, because it's not like giving better internet connections to the citizens would cost a ton of money for the government.

Anyway, perhaps we should make a petition for better internet connections on Change.org, or something.

You missed the point.
What I was trying to say is that if one has so much time on their hands to rant on things like these or petition for better internet speeds, they would be doing a whole more lot of good if they petitioned for clean drinking water and electricity for all as that problem affects more people. But the thing is that even we are selfish and will only fight for something that affects us. So if we are selfish why is it so hard to understand a 'for profit' run business's selfishness.

Do you yourself have ever petitioned for drinking water and electricity ?

Come on people. I know drinking water, electricity all are bigger and more essential issues. But can you guys just focus on this issue please? We have a epidemic of FUP on internet. Say what you want, Internet is essential for the 5% of Indian populace.
And they are being robbed of that. Only that 5% this thread concerns.

The problem with raising voice against FUP is justifying the need for the bandwidth and the limit. Very few users here will use them for legit downloads for their digital purchases. This fraction is so marginal that it almost doesn't exist. Then there are those who are satisfied with just using their connections for mails or facebook.
In short the users can simply be classified as -
1. Illegal downloaders
2. Casual Users
Category 1 can't raise their voice. Category 2 doesn't care.
It is a simple win-win situation for the ISPs.
