Yes, any ID registered with Microsoft will do. You can use any email ID to create account on microsoft.
I use my gmail ID.

I guess they have patched the flaw for non US users. Try with some US proxy.

Already did that yesterday but mind you, after one year you'll back to square one and may be your data will get locked with MS forever if isnt backed up after prior warnings of offer expiry. Then only escape is via upgrading/paying your way to 100gb.

I had some free 50GB in dropbox for 2 year, got with my mobile. I had used around 16GB of it. It expired last october, but dropbox didn't deleted anything - they just seized my write option. I still have read permission on my files. Now I have sync those folders to OneDrive.
Hoping for something similar after 2 years.
