It's impossible to outrun technology,
though updated drivers, software, and
firmware can keep your gear current for
as long as possible. That typically
means you have to rely on hardware
manufacturers to play ball, and Gigabyte 6 Series motherboard owners
will be happy to know Gigabyte is
keeping them in the game with
significant BIOS updates for its entire 6
Series mobo line. Gigabyte's latest 6 Series BIOS updates
add native support for PCI Express Gen.
3 technology, giving owners warm
fuzzies knowing that future discrete
graphics cards will have access to all the
bandwidth they need. In addition, the new BIOSes support Intel's 22nm Ivy
Bridge processors. The list of 6 Series motherboards is long
(15 Z68 boards, 17 P67/H67 boards, and
11 H61 boards for a total of 43
motherboards in all), so rather than
post them all here, we'll refer you to this link. Protip: If you own of these motherboards and plan to upgrade to
an Ivy Bridge processor, flash your BIOS
before dropping in the new CPU.

So PCIe 3 is not a Hardware feature at all?

Hmm.. I think so. Its a very good news for us that we can get PCIe 3.0 via a simple bios update and its totally free of cost.

Great I hope ASUS does that too.
Maybe but Msi doesn't because they are productioning pcie 3.0 mobo. So no support from MSI.

Re: Gigabyte Bakes Native PCI-E 3.0 and Ivy Bridge Support into Latest BIOS for 6 ser

There's no doubt ASUS will come up with the same thing, wondey what they are waiting for it.

Re: Gigabyte Bakes Native PCI-E 3.0 and Ivy Bridge Support into Latest BIOS for 6 ser

Will it be available on other mobos too?

Because it is just a BIOS update if Gigabyte could do it (even H61 series got that update) any other manufacturer should be able to do it right?

I am planning to go for MSI H67 E35 mobo(http://www.techenclave.com/pc-buying-advice/need-advice-in-choosing-components-197447.html) as it is cheaper compared to H67 Gigabyte models available in the local market.

Should I go for a gigabyte mobo instead?

Go for gigabyte instead of msi.

Re: Gigabyte Bakes Native PCI-E 3.0 and Ivy Bridge Support into Latest BIOS for 6 ser

^^hey could you elaborate on that.Is there a hardware difference or not? From what I can make out they seem to have reduced overhead in their encoding scheme,is that a firmware change?

MSI Calls Bluff on Gigabyte's PCIe Gen 3 Ready Claim

In August, Gigabyte made a claim that baffled at least MSI, that scores of its motherboards are Ready for Native PCIe Gen. 3. Along with the likes of ASRock, MSI was one of the first with motherboards featuring PCI-Express 3.0 slots, the company took the pains to educate buyers what PCI-E 3.0 is, and how to spot a motherboard that features it. MSI thinks that Gigabyte made a factual blunder bordering misinformation by claiming that as many as 40 of its motherboards are "Ready for Native PCIe Gen. 3." MSI decided to put its engineering and PR team to build a technically-sound presentation rebutting Gigabyte's claims.

....

MSI begins by explaining that PCIe support isn't as easy as laying a wire between the CPU and the slot. It needs specifications-compliant lane switches and electrical components, and that you can't count on certain Gigabytes for future-proofing.

....

MSI claims that apart from the G1.Sniper 2, none of Gigabyte's so-called "Ready for Native PCIe Gen. 3" motherboards are what the badge claims to be, and that the badge is extremely misleading to buyers. Time to refill the popcorn bowl.
