GigaLan+wifi router

^ To use the 5Ghz band, you'll need the WUSB600N, else you'll get regular N speeds on 2.4Ghz. It doesn't make a difference for G.

Edit : I'd always advise you to wire your main desktop to your router, nothing beats Gigabit speeds and reliability. You can use wireless for the other devices around.

^^^all my machines are on wired. Wifi is for my other devices like the PMPs/ phones and for when friends come over with their lappies. Thinking of putting one machine on wifi.

Will check out the USB adapter. Will come in handy when doing transfers to lappies.

With a dual-band adapter, you can switch to the 5Ghz band where there's no interference from devices like cordless phones, microwave ovens, etc., which translates into a more reliable connection. No other difference.

^ Plus when doing multiple transfers, you can have 1 device on the 2.4Ghz band and the second on the 5Ghz band.

Overall the 5Ghz band has a 20% greater average throughput though for the reasons you just mentioned above.

Update: I received my WRT600N and speeds are fast and everything BUT...

I can't get the router to override the default BSNL DNS. Whatever DNS I configure, the BSNL DNS takes priority. Seems it's a documented bug with the router :@

The reason I'm posting this here is, any recommendations for any custom firmware? Thinking of trying DD-WRT so if any one here uses the same, should I go for it?

Edit: Right now, I have opendns configured on my 3 individual PCs but it be much more convenient if I could have have it done automatically from the router.

^ Damn are you serious? My WRT600N is on the way and I want OpenDNS!

Did you use the Installation CD? It auto detects the BSNL DNS?

Edit: There is a DD-WRT out for 600N but its on RC7 and having some issues with LED and LAN. So I'd suggest you hang on for a couple of month before DD-WRT v24 is released fully, that'll be awesome then!

^^Totally serious. Have flashed to the latest firmware but this bug is documented on the Lynksys forums too. I tried using the installation CD but ended up doing everything manually.

The modem connects with the BSNL DNS since the router uses PPoE to connect. I even tried putting the modem on auto connect and using a static IP to connect the router but then port forwarding doesn't work :(

Edit: The issues are I think only with the LED which I can live without. LAN bug is supposed to be on other models.

^ Damn that's bad!

Anyways, was just looking around and there's supposedly a v24 final out for the 600N, check it out and do post back :)

Ya, and I stand corrected. It does mess up the wired connections. Guess I'll have to wait for updates frm both Linksysy and DD-WRT.

ok, can anybody help out in port forwarding if I set my modem to auto connect and the router to use static IP instead of PPPoE?

Was out the whole day and when I came back in, saw my connection has been dropped. Has been dropping quite often but the router is not auto re-connecting. Status shows net active but I have to manually re-connect frm the web interface to get the net working :@

I'm sure this is the router's fault here as the modem set on auto dial works quite fine.

Please, please somebody help out!

Lemme see once my router gets here if I can fix anything (But not before the 9th cause exams are on!).

Else I think the most logical solution would be to pickup a used/new D-Link 502T and run the router in Bridged mode till the new Linksys / DD-WRT firmware is out.

call the bsnl service that is modem fauity problem due you router is not working

i have face problem at d-link dsl 504-t due to some connection service ip address not host so i use another bsnl modem and host 10.2.2.1 but it work due to bsnl modrem through 192.168.1.1

ask the bsnl service for borrow that bsnl wi-fi or modem and test the connection

also try u put dynamic ip at u dllnk ;)

Has been dropping quite often but the router is not auto re-connecting.

^^not sure what you meant here...Is your modem disconnecting and then not reconnecting too the DSL line?
Not sure what you meant by auto-reconnect for a router
Anyway, Here is a generic port chaining sol'n

- Set the modem to auto connect
- Now assuming the LAN interface of the modem has a static IP of 192.168.1.1, set the WAN interface on the router to a static IP of 192.168.1.2
- Set the LAN interface of the router to 192.168.2.1
- Assign static IPs to the client machines in the range of 192.168.2.n

- Port forward the desired ports on the modem to 192.168.1.2
- Port forward the desired ports on the router to 192.168.2.n

I guess I messed up the details. What I meant was that if I set the router to connect thru PPPoE , the connection would be made. But once the connection dropped, the router would not show the net status as down. I would have to manually disconnect and then re-connect the PPPoE for the net to be accessed.

Anyways, following ur advice, I have set it up the way u suggested and everything's working fine. I had done the same setup earlier but had put the modem as a DHCP server. Now that I've put in IPs manually as per ur advice, no problems and port forwarding works fine (as do the DNS settings) :hap2: . Thanks.

I really hope that a new firmware releases soon!

@Anish, giga and N speeds are great!

Another thing you could try when using PPPoE on the router is to change the setting to Keep Alive with a redial period of 20 seconds, instead of using Connect on Demand. That should ideally prevent it from disconnecting the net connection even if there is no net traffic going across.

lol, that's what I had done. Problem was the router didn't detect the link had broken. Status was always shown as connected and I had to manually disconnect/re-connect. Working fine now with the modem set to always on.

Just wondering, why don't you set the OpenDNS servers on your DSL Modem and the 600N to Auto DHCP or whatever instead of dialling the line from the 600N.

That way, your modem will resolve IP's via OpenDNS only naa?
