Gionee Dream D1 is expected to launch in Indian market by the first week of March as claimed by the Gionee Indian Team. I had a conversation with them and came to know that they are looking to launch the flagship droid in March. Gionee is already a popular name as it’s the second largest Chinese smartphone company in China. It sells almost 23 million smartphones each year in China. Anyway, Gionee Dream D1 is going to be the first low-cost smartphone with Super AMOLED display. Micromax tried their luck in Pixel series but the quad core MMX Pixel is yet to come. Display size of Dream D1 is kept to 4.65 inch. It’s the same display size that was spotted in Samsung Galaxy Nexus.

Now the craze is high in the 5 inch phablet segment. But with 4.65 inch Super AMOLED display Gionee can impress buyers. Major advantage of AMOLED is enhanced battery life. In this technology individual LED bulbs are not externally illuminated. As a result of that power consumption is considerably low. Possibly, Gionee Dream D1 will have a 2100 mAh battery which is just sufficient for a 4.65 inch droid. Of course it’s 720p HD display.

Chances are high that Gionee Dream D1 gets a MediaTek MT6589 SoC accompanied by 1 GB RAM. ROM might be settled to 4 GB with approx 2 GB free and JellyBean. In connectivity segment don’t expect any surprising feature. HSPA+ radio and regular connectivity options will be there. Oh yes, a 8 MP CMOS is there is the rear panel.

amoled is really good indoors, but outdoors its barely viewable even with full brightness setting.

^ I disagree. IMO, the sunlight legibility of phones like Galaxy S3, S2, Note, Note 2, One S, etc. are as good as that of any LCD display. I find my S2 better than the IPS LCD of my Nook Color in bright sunlight because of the high contrast levels of the AMOLED display. While I admit that the overall brightness levels are lower than that of an LCD panel, the insane contrast ratio makes up for it, at least in my books.

Your S2 might be having a better screen than the amoled screen on my pantech burst. The screen on my phone is barely visible outdoors in direct sunlight. its like looking at an almost black screen.

Do you have a screenguard applied on the screen? Perhaps that could explain it? Or the fact that the Burst's display is a 256k colour panel and has the usual AMOLED shared colour matrix while the S2 has a traditional RGB panel. It could be any of these reasons. Having used my S2, brother's Note 1, cousin's Sensation and sister in law's S Plus, I can safely say that the sunlight legibility of the AMOLED displays that I've used are better than or equal to that of their LCD counterparts. Anyway, sorry for the OT.

Any idea about the price of the Dream D1? Looks like a good phone that I could recommend to a friend who's looking to buy a mid range Android.

Reviving an old thread,
The Gionee Dream D1 is available at 13,500 and the Gionee Elife E3 at about 14,100. Both have almost identical specs, (main differences given below)
Question is which one to buy
Particulars : D1 / E3
Screen Size: 4.65 / 4.7
Resolution: 1280 x 720 (both)
Type: Gorilla Glass Class II , Super Amoled Plus / IPS display (OGS solution)
Sim : Dual SIM, GSM + GSM, (Dual Standby) (both)
OS: Android 4.1 / 4.2
Battery: 2100 mAh / 1800 mAh
Memory and Storage
Internal : User Memory: 1.7 GB / 16 GB
Expandable Memory: microSD, upto 32 GB / microSD, upto 32 GB
Memory : 1 GB RAM, 4 GB ROM Included 16 GB memory card/ 1 GB RAM, 16 GB ROM
Primary Camera : 8 Mp / 8 Mp
Secondary Camera : 1 Mp / 2 Mp
Processor: 1.2 GHz Cortex-A7, Quad Core (Both)
Price: 13,500 / 14,100

Both seem evenly matched, except for memory , battery, and display.
D1 Battery is larger
D1 is super amoled and Gorilla Glass II
D1 is marginally cheaper (not by much)

E3 is newer (marginally)
E3 memory wins hands down (does this matter? )
E3 looks better
E3 has 4.2 (does it make a huge difference? )

Battery Life and display is the crux here, especially in sunlight. Would 4.1 and 4.2 make a huge difference ?

Which one should one buy ?

Larger internal memory is a must these days as native Android has dropped support to move apps to the SD card.

Oh, I thought moving apps to SD card was pretty much normal,
And even with 16 GB memory, I have seen several phones which say 1 GB or 2 GB for programs, what is that ?

Moving Apps to SD is now only supported by manufacturers. As for the second question, I have no idea. Maybe they are wrongfully quoting 16GB expandable memory as 16GB memory.

Manufacturer in this case would be Gionee? They say apps can be installed on SD.

Looking for more inputs folks.[DOUBLEPOST=1381207680][/DOUBLEPOST]
where are these phones available ? and what about the ASS ?
from all that I have read, Gionee has very ambitious plans for India, they are available on FL and other places, details given on the Gionee website.

if you can live without Gorilla Glass, then E3 (More Inbuilt memory, Better front cam, newer OS version). I would have gone for D1 though, coz i need every protection i can get for my phone :P

How is the inbuilt memory better than the SD card?
The attraction for me is the bigger battery in D1.
Is the newer 4.2 a big difference over 4.1 ? ( i am on 2.2 right now :D)

What about viewing in bright light / sunlight / outdoors? Which would be better? OGS LCD or Amoled+ Gorilla Glass 2?

Another thing, I can't find the D1 (or any of the GPad series from Gionee) on the their home / chinese site.

More inbuilt memory means you can have more memory with your SD card. and you wont be handicapped incase ur SD goes bad.
Bigger battery is definitely a plus though.
Well, I havent used 4.1 much ( my phone came with 4.1, but i installed a 4.2 custom ROM even before inserting the sim card :P ) , but 4.2 is very good.
Gorilla Glass has nothing to do with viewing clarity. Its just for protection. My previous phone had S Amoled and current one has IPS. Though the IPS has a marginally better viewing in Sunlight, I miss the color reproduction of Amoled.

I do not care much for colors, sunlight viewing is more important. Looks like the only plus left for D1 is the battery now.
I think E3 would be a better choice (also considering the D1 is not on the original website) .
@harryneopotter Thank you for your inputs.

Would this be a better choice than the lavas, xolos and the micromaxes ?

I called the Gionee 1800 number, seemed proffessional, but then this was to buy, and it was not a service call.
