Going for MTNL Triband...which modem to opt for ?

I have finally registered for the MTNL Triband 749 plan (with 5GB Download limit). I have not opted for the MTNL modem at present since i need time to decide which one should i go for.
Guys plz suggest if is should go with the modem that mtnl is providing or i should buy one from lamington road etc on my own. If not MTNL then plz tell me specifically (with model and price) which one should i go for. I have absolutely no knowledge with regards to the same. I want a normal and not a wireless modem.

Will wireless modem be more costly than the normal one ?

Any one:

Iball Baton is great 1.5~1.6k with 3 years WARRANTY.

502T 1.7k 1 years warranty.

GLB502T 1 years warranty.

Beetel 220BX 1 years warranty.

Netgear wireless 1.8k itdepot (I think)

I had good information about router but lost in HDD Formatting last week.

u can go in for a wireless router (Linksys WAG200G or any other ADSL2+ compatible router) rite now.. they can also connect ur desktop with a CAT5 cable.. it has 4 lan slots and u can connect it to upto 4 pcs.. can also connect to lappys and other desktops having a Wi-Fi receiver..

Look at this in practical terms. MTNL will charge you just Rs. 50/- per month as rent for wireless or wired modem.
Buying a modem would cost you upward of 1400 bucks for a wired modem and 3300 for a wireless one. With MTNL, in case you want to change your ISP you don't land up with dead and possibly obsolete investment. Also 50 bucks rent is peanuts for the amount of upfront money you save.
In fact if your shift to the unlimited plan, you don't pay rent for the modem.

Do keep in mind that MTNL has non-refundable upfront charges if u plan to use their modems on rental basis.
basic modem 500 rs.
wi-fi modem 800 rs.

^^ya i am going for the MTNL modem and to first analyse my usage i have taken this plan. I am not interested in the NIght UL plan atm since i do not stay in Mumbai all the time and am here only on weekends.Other time my bro will be using net and that too not daily. He is not into downloading stuff (movies etc) so want to check my usage first and then shift the plan. The 999 one is good but speed is capped at 256kbps, thats the let down.

Guys...finally the modem/router is at my home. I opted for the MTNL provided modem/router only. Its model number is MT882

No company as such is written. How is this modem ???

its a good modem
i have the same !

as u are on the data limit plan, kindly do no forget to put ur modem in bridge mode for easy reconnection and disconnection !

^^i have opted for the 999 UL connection now...so no data limit :)

Any thing special i need to do ??

How about torrenting....anything to take care or configure for it ??

By the way, the modem box has a CD which has written over it 'ADSL2+ User CD ROM'

It has a PPPOe dialer and usb drivers

But the PPPOE dialer has only windows 98/2k/xp in the list. I have vista home premium in my laptop so i installed the xp on this machine. Is it ok ??

Also just for testing i just plugged in the modem and connected the LAN cable in lappy and modem but the LAN light did not come on. May be it will come when i will connect the phone line i suppose. Is it true ??

Yes, there is no company's name written on it. Just MTNL and MT882 is written. But don't worry its a very good modem and if in future you encounter any problems they will surely replace it.
