Google's earthquake alerts system to be made available in more countries
Washington [US], May 2 (ANI): American technology conglomerate Google recently announced that its earthquake alerts system will now work in more countries. The safety feature essentially creates a large network of earthquake detectors by utilising sensors in Android phones worldwide.

It's only to Greece and New Zealand so far but it's a clever use of phone technology. Anyone using an Android device in those countries will receive automatic alerts based in part on what other users are experiencing.
