Google has launched Domain Registration service and its currently beta and invite only. Google promises that it will be easy to set up domains and manage them. Since most of the Google products are 'noob' friendly, I believe this new service also easy to use for all, even absolute beginners.

to request an invite code, fill this form: https://domains.google.com/registrar

The service will also include the new domain gTlds such as .blog, .onl etc.

Here are some good stuff about it:
  • .com price will be mostly $12
  • It will be easy to set up for all
  • No extra cost for private registration
  • Branded emails like sayhi@avi.com, upto 100. [i.e. free Google Apps for email]
  • Easy to customize subdomains and domain forwarding
  • Fast DNS lookup cos of Google servers

These feature seem good for $12. And I am very sure, in coming years Google will be a big player and competing with GoDaddy, eNom or Gandi.

After 20 years, it will be difficult to find a sector where Google won't be present. Coming back to this, $12 seems a bit expensive.

^for the services they are offering, $12 is really good price. Currently I pay $10 at namecheap, that includes without private registration, horrible UI and hassle to setup email.

There is not much details about it. Can we transfer the domain from existing registrar to google too?

$12 for private registration + free email? sounds alright to me.

And in 20 years google will probably won't exist...at least not at the scale they're at today.

Namescheap has indeed horrible UI

^tbh all the domain registrars I use have horrible UI. Its not that easy to create a noob friendly UI with tools provide lots of management controls.

IMO Google is great at UI. Check Google Apps, any noob can get started on it.

Isn't it dangerous to depend upon Google for everything?
Thats what I wonder. It was ok when they were rising but now that they are a giant and trying to eclipse everything I hope others step up. While having an integrated ecosystems is great but depending on the same provider for all the services and trusting my data is a scary thought.
