Google's Nexus 7 tablet currently uses Nvidia's Tegra 3 SoC, but its next iteration may use Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro instead of Nvidia's latest Tegra 4 SoC, according to reports.

The next Nexus 7 tablet is expected to be unveiled at Google I/O event this year in May. An upgraded Nexus 7 possibly with full HD display, new chipset, improved design with thinner bezel is being rumored. It is also expected to launch with Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie .

Qualcomm has dominated the mobile chipset segment last year, and now reports indicate that Google will favor Qualcomm for the processor in next Nexus 7 tablet because of competitive prices and better 4G LTE radio integration in the SoC.

The Tegra 4 chipset from Nvidia packs 4 Cortex A15 CPU cores clocked at 1.9GHz and a fifth core for battery efficiency along with 72 GeForce ULP GPU cores. The new SoC promises higher ( about 45% ) battery life compared to Tegra 3 and packs more processing power, but it doesn't integrate a LTE chip.

So if the rumors are true, the next Nexus 7 tablet might come at same $199 price with the improved specifications and $249 for the 4G LTE variant. We will know if the rumors are true in the coming months.
