Guys, I have been trying to look around the net to find out if any NMEA compliant maps (for GPS devices) exist for Indian Roads, terrains, and more importantly cities sp. Chennai and Delhi?

There is no clear info available on the net, and it seems that though some maps are indeed available, the sources seem a little dubious, and I haveno idea how accurate/detailed thos maps would be....

Any inputs appreciated :hap2:

What about the luxury series of Mercedes, BMW and the like? I should have thought that those cars have built in GPS systems for Mumbai, Delhi etc.

No.... They work only in Europe and North America.

The whole map comes on a sort of HD or CD/DVD. There is no such facility for India

Nahhh,,,GPS receivers work all over the world as the satellite network is global ...It;s the lack of NMEA compliant maps that is the issue in India (Basically maps that can plot ur position against the location data received from the GPS module) ,...GPS maps work fairly nicely in Malaysia for one...

In fact, if one had the patience, you could actuall plot ur own maps....

and there are maps available for India too (search on fabmall)

I just want to get the fedback frm someone who has actually used a GPS devicein India before I sink in my funds

^^I had checked out this GPS system on my uncle's Lexus when I was at CES06 last month. Like you said, tracking is done via satellites but the local maps need to be fed into the memory. So, as newer developments spring up, the maps need to be updated as well.

For instance, a whole area of NJ just showed up as blank on the display. And what's the solution? 500 dollars for an official Lexus upgrade. 500$!!

Anyway, I'm going to track and add to this thread because I'm working on a GPS story too. So post whatever you dig up.

Well firstly believe it or not, GPS receivers are officially illegal in India :P. About where you could find the base map, I think you might wanna try Eicher. They have the best maps of India. However those buggers charge an insane amount of money :P. We do have a few garmin devices here in our office. I think they got the base map from Eicher for those.

nahi re...Garmin is officialy available in delhi and Bombay...so i doubt if that;s be illegal

As for maps,

here

though i dunno how good that is

That's right....but you can feed any NMEA compliant digital map to a receiver...

In fact a bunch of my cheapskate friends use the MS streets & maps software that comes for ~80$ alongg with the GPS USB module

and this map basically covers all of US & Canada......if u get lost, just fire up ur notebook, and find ur way

not as convenient as a dashboard mounted unit, but nowhere as pricey as that either

In fact there are BT GPS modules too that you can hook up with any BT enabled PDA

so anyway, the qstn still remains....

any info on decent chennai/Delhi road and India general digital maps?

Sweet!

check mapmyindia.com

The delhi map seems to be as detailed as any American city

The catch....friggin 5K to buy :(

well, at least it is a start

Well, I can guarantee that according to the archaic indian laws, it is illegal. Heard it straight from the surveyor general of india :P. However no one actually follows those laws.

Check out http://virtualindia.msresearch.in ;)

Currently only bangalore data is around to zoom straight to that city. Also make sure you are in road map mode... aerial has only nasa blue marble data :P

yeah..... my cousin sent me the US link of that.

It was awesome. My uncle and other cousin(the one still in India :P ) gave me a guided tour of LAs Vegas and Boston using MSN Virtual earth.

Fogot the link though.

live.msn.com or something like tht.

EDIT Link was http://local.live.com/
