A Seasonic 380 or Corsair CX 400 or especially the Corsair VX 450 should be enough for your system with a 9600GT.

Frankly I would recommend a Glacial Power 650 as your best bet. It costs around 4.5k but would be good enough for an oced i7/C2Q + 5850/5870 + with room for other goodies though that would make it perform at its peak.

Are you out of your mind or what? He is struggling to manage 4.5k for his GPU and a good enuf PSU for the same and you want him to spend another 3-3.5k.

Better than a 4770 would be to get a 4850 for 6.5k which is cheaper and faster at stock.

Anyway, a 9600GT is his best bet considering his budget.

yup, i'm on a real tight budget, guys

so, it's either 4670 or 9600GT. but i was advised 9600's a power hog.

can someone point me to a psu-for-dummies guide or something, cause i don't have the faintest clue what it's for

According to July buying guide, with
GPU: Palit 9600GT 512MB 4.5k

this is enough:
Cabinet: Zebronics Bijli ATX - 1.1k
SMPS: Zebronics Real Power 360W - 1.5k
