Graphic Cards GPU Purchase Dilemma

I had shortlisted the 4870 / GT260 / GX2, but as everyone suggested I am also waiting for the launch of the 4xxx series, to see where these cards stand, and take the plunge!

But I guess the 4870 would be the most sensible option if leaked reports are to be believed.

Makes sense. Anyway I was going to wait at least till the end of the month since the introduction of new cards means a possibility for price reductions and the new AMD cards are scheduled for release on 25th. I was considering the 9800GX2 because at $449, its the best performance for money single card setup though it has its shortcomings.

Anyway from some reports it seems that even the 4850 crossfire would be capable of matching a GTX 280 in which case a 4870 would be worth watching for.

PS- I gather that you earn ur living thro the IT field, do you really get the time to play?

I work for a product based development company, so things work different from most services based companies abundant in our country. While most employees in services sector are either neck deep in work and doing overtime to meet unreasonable deadlines or completely without work (on bench) for long periods of time, its not the same in companies like mine where the work load is somewhat more balanced.

There are periods where we are heavily loaded with work, but for most of the time, as long as we complete the work assigned, we can have your free time in the evenings and weekends. :)

Added to that, my only interests is are in Technology and gaming, so most of my spare time is spent on gaming. :p

at high resolution and shader intensive games eg latest releases including crysis 4870 is 75-85% performance of 280gtx and crossing 260gtx at times over 1920-1200

4850cf is somewhat 15% faster than 280 and cf4870 is as much as 50%faster

at high reso + aa 1920

at 2560 however 48xxcf is less faster but still 4850cf is faster than gtx280 in benches and games both

5 tweaktown confirmed about cf 4850 As frustrated at NVIDIA as I am, who has really annoyed me is ATI. The fact that the NDA has been pushed back is just killing me. Knowing the results on the HD 4850 has completely changed my outlook on the GTX 280. At the moment, a lot of review websites have compared the GTX 280 to the 9800 GX2 and they see the performance being similar with a single core, then they see the new technology that’s implemented into the card and find it all to be pretty amazing. Performance talks though, and if these people had seen the HD 4850 run in CrossFire, I don’t doubt that their opinion on the cards would have likely changed.
