Graphic Cards GPU(s) upgrade suggestion for roughly 30K

Forerunner
My friend is going in for a GPU upgrade to his system and he has a max budget of 30K. He was waiting for the next gen cards to be released but he is unhappy about the delays and no solid release dates.

I need to suggest him the perfect configuration. His proccy and Motherboard are same as mine in my Signature. The motherboard has Crossfire support and he has a 750W power supply with 2 8 pin power connectors for GPUs. He plays at 1920x1080 resolution on his 24" monitor. Another thing is that he might need a card that blows hot air out of the cabinet as he has cool air blowing in from the bottom of the cabinet.

Need your help in selecting the best among the 2.

1. 2x6950

I guess there is a 6950 model which can be unlocked to 6970? Which is that? Also 2GB or 1GB models to go for?

2. 1xGTX 580

I guess the lowest GTX580 that is available is MSI one at ~28.5K

3. 1x5970

Radeon 5970 is not widely available I believe.

4. 1x 6970

5. Any others?

Thanks.

1 word.

DON'T!!!

HD7000 being announced on 5th December, that's 3 days, LAUNCH in january.

Spend 30k now, maybe the 15k HD7000 GPU would come close to pawning it.

Wait for a month.

Unlocking can be done with only a REFERENCE 2GB model. Eg. Powercolor HD6950 2GB.

Galaxy has one GTX580 model with 3 FANS!! So i dont think it'll overheat or such. Its available for around 27k.

Umm...waiting for the 7XXX series is a pretty good idea but they wont be released at once in a month. It'll take months to release more models. And who knows if AMD will delay it again >_<

And yeah dont forget that the INR value has fallen to as low as US$1=52INR and if rumors are to be believed then HD7950 will costs about $400 ie. approx 20k while HD7970 for $500 ie. apporx 26k. Now mind you, thats US price and they costs more in india so my guess is that HD7970 will hit over 30k while the cheaper HD7950 will come to around 25k

^^ Should be by end of January.

Consider it, you may end up saving as much as 10-15k on similar performance card, not to mention, probably 50% lesser power consumption too!

^^ Hopefully it arrives by that time. I will ask my friend to sit tight for another 2 months based on the suggestions here.

Thanks ipwnz for the detailed info.

You are welcome.

Wow, HD7950 for 449$, that's a STEEP STEEP price tag, for a 150W card I say..

I'm expecting something big, really big with it. AMD must be confident enough with it's performance, hence the price tag.

Do you realise guys, this is the 1st TIME in SOOO MANY YEARS that AMD has priced it's single GPU above 500$, at 549$ for the HD7970..

Whao, even with the HD5870, with 40nm, and 6 months of lead over nVidia, AMD priced it at 369$, it ended up being sold at 399$.

I'm really expecting BIG BIG BIG!
