Graphic Cards Graphics Card for Movies

Huh?
Guide
I had recently bought a 23" Samsung LED Full HD Monitor. I have a CPU with 4GB RAM AMD Athlon 3.0 GHZ processor running with Win7 Ultimate. The CPU also has ATI X1600 Graphics card. This card does not have driver support for Win7 though it works. While I am watching 1080p movies there is a slight slag in the movement of the pictures. I use vlc player and also KM player to play the movies. I do not do any gaming. Can anyone please suggest a good graphics card to watch the movies to it's full potential? I should also add that the Monitor does not have HDMI connection and only DVI is present. I am also not sure if it is a disadvantage without a HDMI connection. I'm not looking for a high end card as I already mentioned I only watch movies. Can anyone please suggest me a good graphics card for this type of setup. Appreciate all your help.

Same sort of thread is going on in the section, what's your budget if it's under 4k then get what chirag's suggesting.

Well, the cheapest you could get is a 8400GS or a 9400GT nVIDIA card OR 4350 AMD card. not sure on the pricing, but it wont do anything else too. Or get a 5450, and finally look at a 6450. All of these should be below 3K.

Main differences between the cards is that the 8400GS,9400GT and 4350 are DX10 cards. 5450 and 6450 are DX11. Also 6450 has support for HDMI 1.4a, others are 1.3, so if you want to watch 3D content in the future, then 6450 is more future proof.

Now on to the matter of HDMI vs DVI, the main difference is that DVI does not allow audio along with it, but HDMI does. If you do not have HDMI support on the card OR TV/monitor, you will need to connect an audio cable for the sound if supported by the monitor. Also having HDMI on the card is a good thing.

Finally, if its time to upgrade your system, then do that instead of spending money on GPU. Most of the newer mobos come with DVI/HDMI onboard and can play 1080p videos flawlessly.

Please let me know the difference between Sapphire HD6450 and HD5450. There seems to be Rs.800 to Rs.1000 price difference and also what is the difference between the 1GB, 2GB cards.

Thanks all. I got Sapphire HD6450 and the resolution is too good in the LED monitor. I can't beleive what I have been missing. Thanks again for all your support for making the decision to buy this gfx card and a special thanks to chirag.

One more question - My brother is looking out for a used graphics card and his system is a AMD Sempron 3.2 GHZ with 4GB DDR2 RAM and 64bit WIN7 with Asus M2N-MX SE Plus board. He has come across a two years old xfx nvidia 9400GT for 1.5K. Not much into gaming. Can he buy this for this price or is there anyting better that can be suggested. Thanks.

Bought a 1GB DDR3 5450 card and installed over an Asus M2N-MX SE Plus board using the DVI/HDMI connection. When booted up it is not working. Thought it might be issue with BIOS as this board is quite old and tried to update the BIOS and was not able to even though there is an update in the Asus portal. I could only update through floppy disc which is discontinued now. How else can I update the BIOS after downloading it. The GFX card is working in another machine. Can you please let me know if this issue is with BIOS or should I get any other GFX card.

If the GFX card is working in other machine, then there is no need to get another card. Try to hold the GFX card in perfect position on mobo and start your system...Let me know if display pops up...

You bought a 6450 or 5450?? Nothing to do with your problem, just a query coz in above comment you have purchased 6450 ;)

The one I bought was Sapphire ATI Radeon HD5450 1GB DDR3 card. Did everything and even cleaned the pci slot of all dust but still no display. The one that was already installed in the mobo was Radeon X1300 series card. Tested the 5450 in two Intel mobo and it works perfectly. Probably mobo incompatability with Asus M2N-MX SE Plus board or BIOS update required?

have you tried disabling the onboard GFX first ?

Boot first using your onboard VGA> BIOS Settings and > turn off the onboard VGA.

Save and shut down the system.

Now attach your new card and see if it works?

Or reset BIOS by removing battery.

AFAIk, 9400gt@1.5k is not worth it, especially used. try to get a 8600gt, will be good.

edit: Also saw, that not much into gaming, so 9400gt is an ok buy.

Turned off the onboard VGA removed battery and inserted it again. Nothing works. Is it because this particular mobo supports only PCI-E 1.0 slot and 5450 is a PCI-E 2.0 card? Not sure. I have also downloaded the BIOS update for this mobo but not able to update BIOS from Win7 as it can be done only through a floppy disk. Any help in solving this issue highly appreciated.

So that x1300 of yours works on this mobo but 5450 doesnt...right??

If your onboard VGA is working fine then I recommend you to remove all the drivers of x1300 that were installed in your PC by logging in windows... restart the pc once... then shutdown the PC.... power off.... install 5450 on mobo and start pc... the display should come up IMO...

If not then,

The mobos PCIE slot is causing the trouble, a BIOS update "MIGHT" rectify the problem. Not sure though.

Bought Sapphire 6450 1GB DDR3 after returning the 5450. This one works good with this mobo. Maybe the 5450 was not backward Compatable with this mobo. I could have updated the BIOS but since it was not my system did not take the risk to update in case I bricked it. Thank you all for your support.
